Toyota Legender

The Legender is the dressed-up version of the Fortuner, with its own nose and tail, a white-and-black paint scheme, a maroon-and-black cabin and more comfort kit. It uses the same 204 PS 2.8 diesel. It suits buyers who want a Fortuner that looks and feels more upmarket, and who are happy to pay ₹5.2–5.7 lakh more than the matching Fortuner for it.

Our pick at each price
  • 4x2 AT₹42.92 lakh

At ₹42.92 lakh the 4x2 automatic has all the Legender's comfort kit, including ventilated seats, a wireless charger and the kick-sensor tailgate. Most owners stay on tarmac, where four-wheel drive adds cost and weight for little gain.

  • 4x4 AT Neo Drive 48V₹48.29 lakh

If you need four-wheel drive with an automatic, this ₹48.29 lakh mild hybrid is the only option. It adds low range, terrain modes and start-stop, but check ventilated seats on the car, as Toyota's brochure does not list them here.

Our verdict on the Legender

The Legender is a Fortuner with nicer clothes. You get a sharper face, LED lighting, a two-tone roof, a better-trimmed cabin with ventilated seats on most versions, and a powered tailgate. Underneath it is the same tough, dependable ladder-frame SUV with the same 2.8 diesel, the same firm ride and the same cramped third row. The premium over a comparable Fortuner is ₹5.2–5.7 lakh, which buys mostly looks and comfort features rather than ability. The cabin tech is dated for the money, with an 8-inch touchscreen and no ADAS, and you cannot choose another paint. If you like the look, the 4x2 AT is the sensible buy. If you want maximum ability for the money, a regular Fortuner 4x4 or the GR-S makes more sense, and a monocoque rival will be more comfortable on the road.

Good things

  • Distinctive styling and a richer cabin than the regular Fortuner
  • Strong 2.8 diesel with proven reliability and resale
  • Ventilated seats, dual-zone climate and powered tailgate as standard on the 4x2 AT
  • Real 4x4 hardware with low range and a locking differential

Could be better

  • ₹5.2–5.7 lakh more than the equivalent Fortuner for mostly cosmetic gains
  • No paint choice beyond Platinum White Pearl with a black roof
  • Small 8-inch touchscreen and no ADAS at this price
  • Firm ride and a tight third row, as in every Fortuner

Toyota Legender: the Fortuner in a sharper suit

Toyota sells the Legender as a separate, more upmarket model alongside the Fortuner. It has its own split LED headlamps, a slimmer grille, sequential indicators front and rear, a black roof over Platinum White Pearl paint, and a black-and-maroon cabin with contrast stitching and ambient lighting. Underneath it shares the Fortuner's ladder-frame chassis, coil-sprung rear axle and seven seats.

Power comes from the 2.8-litre turbo diesel with 204 PS. With the 6-speed automatic it makes 500 Nm; the 4x4 manual, which uses a 6-speed gearbox with Toyota's iMT, makes 420 Nm. The 4x4 automatic is now sold as the Neo Drive 48V, which adds a small electric motor and 48V battery for start-stop and assistance. The 4x4s get high and low ranges, a locking differential and downhill assist.

The 4x2 AT runs on 17-inch wheels and has six speakers; the 4x4s get 18-inch wheels and an 11-speaker JBL system. Every Legender has 7 airbags, stability control, hill assist, an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control and powered front seats. Toyota quotes an 80-litre tank but does not publish ground clearance, boot space or fuel economy.

Legender or Fortuner: is the extra money worth it?

The Legender costs ₹5.2–5.7 lakh more than the matching Fortuner diesel. That buys styling, a two-tone roof, ventilated seats, ambient lighting and a kick-sensor tailgate. Mechanically they are the same. If the look matters to you, it is a fair premium; if not, the Fortuner does the same job for less.

Which Legender should I buy?

For city and highway use, the 4x2 AT has the full comfort kit and the lowest price. Choose the 4x4 MT only if you want a manual for serious off-road use. The Neo Drive 48V 4x4 AT is the one for buyers who need four-wheel drive and an automatic.

What does the Neo Drive 48V system do?

It adds an 8.5 kW motor and a 48V battery to the 2.8 diesel. This allows engine start-stop in traffic and some electric assistance, which should help smoothness and fuel use slightly. It is a mild hybrid, not a full hybrid like the Innova Hycross, and Toyota quotes the same 204 PS and 500 Nm.

Can I get a Legender in another colour?

No. Toyota sells the Legender only in Platinum White Pearl with a black roof. If you want another colour, the regular Fortuner offers several, including black, bronze and solid white.
