Toyota Innova Crysta

Toyota's body-on-frame MPV is the old-school Innova: a 2.4 diesel, rear-wheel drive, a five-speed manual and a reputation for running for years with little trouble. It suits buyers who cover long distances, carry seven or eight people on bad roads, and value reliability and resale over features and refinement.

At ₹24.93 lakh it is the cheapest Crysta with seven airbags, and it adds LED headlamps, auto climate control, push-button start and cruise control. For a family car we would not settle for three airbags.

  • GX+ 8-Seater₹21.20 lakh

For fleet or budget use, the GX+ at ₹21.20 lakh adds a rear camera with DVR and power-folding mirrors to the GX. Accept that it has only three airbags.

Our verdict on the Innova Crysta

The Crysta survives because nothing else does its job quite the same way. The 2.4 diesel is strong and unstressed, the ladder frame shrugs off bad roads and heavy loads, and Toyota's reliability and resale are hard to match. That is why fleets and long-distance families still queue for it. It is also showing its age. There is no automatic, the cabin and features lag behind cheaper rivals, and the GX and GX+ get only three airbags. Prices have risen to ₹19.72–26.63 lakh, which is Innova Hycross money. If you drive mainly on good roads and want an automatic, the Hycross is the more modern buy. Choose the Crysta if you need a tough diesel workhorse, and pay for the VX to get the seven airbags.

Good things

  • Strong, proven 2.4 diesel with 343 Nm
  • Body-on-frame toughness for bad roads and heavy loads
  • Toyota reliability and very strong resale value
  • Seven or eight seats with a usable third row

Could be better

  • Manual only; the automatic is no longer sold
  • Only three airbags on GX and GX+; seven airbags start at the ₹24.93 lakh VX
  • Dated cabin and features for a car costing ₹20–27 lakh
  • Long waiting periods reported for every variant

Toyota Innova Crysta: the workhorse that refuses to retire

The Innova Crysta is a body-on-frame MPV, 4,735 mm long on a 2,750 mm wheelbase. It is sold alongside the newer, monocoque Innova Hycross and appeals to buyers who want a diesel and a tougher build. Prices run from ₹19.72 lakh to ₹26.63 lakh ex-showroom across GX, GX+, VX and ZX grades, with seven or eight seats on all but the ZX.

There is one powertrain: a 2.4-litre diesel making 150 PS and 343 Nm, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual. Eco and Power drive modes are standard. The engine is known for pulling well with a full load and for covering very high mileages. The automatic was dropped, so anyone who wants two pedals has to look at the Hycross instead.

Every Crysta has stability control, hill-start assist and tilt and telescopic steering. GX adds an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. GX+ adds a rear camera with a built-in recorder and power-folding mirrors. VX moves to seven airbags, LED projector headlamps, automatic climate control, push-button start and cruise control, and ZX adds leather seats, a powered driver's seat and TPMS.

Which variant should you buy?

VX for families. It is the first grade with seven airbags, and it adds the comfort features you expect at this price. The ZX adds leather, a powered driver's seat and TPMS for ₹1.7 lakh, which is a lot for those three items. The GX+ is good value for fleet use or as a workhorse, but its three-airbag count is a real gap for a family car.

Seven or eight seats?

The eight-seater costs only ₹5,000 more and has a bench in the middle row. Choose it if you regularly carry eight people. The seven-seater's captain chairs are more comfortable and make it easier to reach the third row, and they are the only option on the ZX.

Crysta or Hycross?

The Hycross is newer, has a monocoque body, a petrol and a strong-hybrid option, automatic gearboxes and more features. The Crysta keeps the diesel, the ladder frame and a manual gearbox. If you drive on good roads and want efficiency and comfort, buy the Hycross. If you cover huge distances on rough roads or need a tough commercial workhorse, the Crysta still makes sense.

Is it worth the price?

Only if you value what it does uniquely: durability, a strong diesel and resale. On features and safety per rupee, many cheaper SUVs and MPVs do better. Toyota's long waiting periods also mean you should confirm delivery dates before paying a booking amount.
