Our verdict on the Innova HyCross

The Innova HyCross replaced the rugged diesel Crysta formula with a monocoque body, front-wheel drive and a choice of petrol or strong hybrid. The result is a quieter, smoother and more spacious family car. The hybrid is the one to have: it claims 23.24 km/l, is very refined in traffic and pulls well enough with a full load. The weak point is the price gap. The cheapest hybrid is ₹26.76 lakh, about ₹5.8 lakh above the best petrol, and the top ZX (O) is close to ₹32 lakh. The petrol GX (O) is a sensible way in, but it is far thirstier. We would buy the VX hybrid seven-seater, and look at the ZX trims only if the car will be chauffeur-driven and the rear comfort matters.

Toyota Innova HyCross: the hybrid family car that makes sense of the price

The Innova HyCross is Toyota’s modern take on the Innova: a large monocoque MPV with front-wheel drive. Prices run from ₹18.70 lakh to ₹31.84 lakh ex-showroom across G, GX, GX (O), VX, VX (O), ZX and ZX (O) trims, most in seven- or eight-seat form. ZX trims are seven-seat only, and the base G is listed as a fleet version.

Two powertrains are offered. The G, GX and GX (O) use a 2.0 petrol with a CVT, claiming 16.13 km/l. The VX and above use a 2.0 strong hybrid with an e-CVT, claiming 23.24 km/l and able to move on electric power alone at low speeds. Both use a 2.0-litre engine and drive the front wheels, and there is no diesel option.

Six airbags, stability control and an electronic parking brake are standard. The GX (O) adds auto AC and a 360-degree camera, the VX (O) a panoramic sunroof, the ZX a powered tailgate, JBL audio and a memory driver seat, and the ZX (O) the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite and powered Ottoman middle seats.

Which variant should you buy?

The VX hybrid seven-seater at ₹26.76 lakh. It brings the efficient hybrid with the 360-degree camera and auto AC. The VX (O) adds a panoramic sunroof for about ₹2 lakh, and the ZX trims add luxury touches that matter mainly to rear-seat passengers.

Petrol or hybrid?

The hybrid costs about ₹5.8 lakh more than the GX (O) petrol but claims 23.24 km/l against 16.13 km/l, and is smoother in traffic. If you drive a lot, especially in cities, the hybrid pays back over a long ownership. For low annual mileage, the petrol GX (O) is the cheaper way in.

Seven or eight seats?

The seven-seater has two middle-row captain chairs, which are more comfortable and give easy access to the third row. The eight-seater has a bench and costs only ₹5,000 more. Choose eight only if you regularly need the extra seat; ZX trims come only as seven-seaters.

HyCross or Maruti Invicto?

The Invicto is the same hybrid car with a Maruti badge, offered in fewer variants and without a petrol-only option. The HyCross gives a cheaper petrol entry and more features at the top, including ADAS on the ZX (O). Compare quotes; pick whichever gives the better price and service access.
