Toyota Rumion
Toyota's version of the Maruti Ertiga: a compact seven-seat MPV with a 1.5 petrol, a 6-speed automatic option and a factory CNG. It shares the Ertiga's practicality and economy and adds Toyota's badge and warranty terms. It suits families who need seven seats on a budget, especially those who prefer a Toyota dealer.

Our verdict on the Rumion
The Rumion is a sensible family car, because it is an Ertiga with a Toyota badge. It seats seven, the 1.5 petrol is smooth and economical, the automatic is a proper torque converter rather than an AMT, and six airbags are standard. The CNG makes it cheap to run. The catch is that it costs more than the Maruti it is based on, and listings show waiting periods of around two months. The third row is fine for children and short adult trips but not for long journeys, and boot space with all seats up is small. Compare final on-road quotes from Toyota and Maruti dealers and buy whichever is cheaper or closer. If you want more space, features or a diesel, look at the Kia Carens.
Good things
- Seven seats in a compact, easy-to-drive body
- Six airbags and ESP as standard
- Smooth 6-speed torque-converter automatic
- Factory CNG with a 26.11 km/kg claim
Could be better
- Costs more than the near-identical Maruti Ertiga
- Third row is best for children or short trips
- Little boot space with all seven seats in use
- No automatic with CNG, and no diesel

Toyota Rumion: an Ertiga with a Toyota badge
The Rumion is built by Maruti Suzuki and sold by Toyota. Under the skin it is the Ertiga, with a 1.5-litre K-series petrol and a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. A factory-fitted CNG version is offered on the S trim with the manual. Toyota claims 20.51 km/l for the manual, 20.11 km/l for the automatic and 26.11 km/kg for the CNG.
All variants have six airbags, ESP and hill hold assist, and second-row AC vents. The S adds a music system and remote locking; the G brings a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear camera, automatic climate control and alloy wheels; the V adds cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring and automatic headlamps.
Prices run from ₹9.79 lakh to ₹14.21 lakh ex-showroom. The main reason to choose the Rumion over the Ertiga is preference for Toyota's dealer network or a better deal on the day. The car itself, its space and its running costs are the same. Paint choices are limited to five shades, including Rustic Brown and Spunky Blue, and the CNG is only offered on one trim, so plan around that if you want it.
Which variant should you buy?
The G. On the petrol manual at ₹11.93 lakh it brings the touchscreen, rear camera and climate control. The G automatic is the one for city traffic. The V adds only cruise control, TPMS and auto headlamps, which are useful but not essential.
How does it compare with the Maruti Ertiga?
Mechanically they are the same car. The Rumion is usually priced a little higher, with a slightly different grille and trim. Get quotes from both dealers and choose on final price, waiting period and how close the service centre is.
Petrol, automatic or CNG?
If you drive mostly in the city and travel with a full family, the automatic is worth its premium of about ₹1.5 lakh over the manual. If you run the car hard every day, the S CNG cuts fuel costs, but there is no CNG automatic and the cylinder takes up boot space.
Is the third row usable?
For children and for adults on short trips, yes. Two adults in the third row on a long drive will find knee room and under-thigh support limited. If you need a proper third row often, look at a bigger MPV such as the Kia Carens.
