Our verdict on the Camry
The Camry is the sensible choice in the luxury sedan class. Its 2.5 hybrid is smooth, quiet and remarkably efficient for a 4.9-metre car, and the rear seat, with power recline and armrest controls, is built for owners who use a driver. Toyota's reliability record and the long hybrid battery warranty keep ownership worries low. The compromises are a less special cabin than a BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class, a less exciting drive, and low ground clearance that needs care over speed breakers. The price has also crept close to ₹49 lakh. But those German rivals cost far more to buy and to run. If you want a comfortable, efficient, well-equipped sedan and do not need the badge, the Camry is easy to recommend.
Good things
- Strong hybrid with a claimed 25.49 km/l, excellent for a car this size
- Comfortable rear seat with power recline and armrest controls
- Nine airbags and Level 2 ADAS as standard
- Toyota reliability and an 8-year hybrid battery warranty
Could be better
- Cabin feels less luxurious than German rivals
- Low-slung body needs care over speed breakers and broken roads
- Price has risen to nearly ₹49 lakh ex-showroom
- Only one powertrain and no all-wheel drive

Toyota Camry: an efficient, comfortable chauffeur sedan
The current Camry is the ninth generation and is sold in India only as a hybrid. A 2.5-litre petrol works with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery to deliver around 230 PS, through an e-CVT with Eco, Normal and Sport modes. Toyota claims 25.49 km/l, which is extraordinary for a sedan nearly 4.9 metres long.
There are two versions at ₹48.69 lakh ex-showroom. The Elegant comes with nine airbags, Level 2 ADAS, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, three-zone climate control, a sunroof, ventilated front seats and power-reclining rear seats. The Sprint Edition adds a matte black bonnet, roof and boot lid, a body kit, matte black 18-inch wheels and ambient lighting.
This is a car that makes a strong case on running costs. The hybrid uses far less fuel than a petrol or diesel luxury sedan, and Toyota backs the battery for eight years or 1,60,000 km. The trade-off is that it is a comfortable cruiser rather than a driver's car, and it sits low. Take it over your usual roads before you buy.
Elegant or Sprint Edition?
Both cost the same according to most listings and share the same hybrid and core equipment. The Sprint Edition is purely a styling choice, with matte black panels, a body kit and ambient lighting. Pick on looks, and confirm the exact price with the dealer, as one listing shows the Sprint Edition ₹20,000 higher.
How does it compare with the Skoda Superb?
The Superb offers more boot and rear legroom and a quicker turbo-petrol, but uses noticeably more fuel. The Camry is quieter in town and much cheaper to run. If you cover long distances, the Camry's economy makes a real difference over five years.
Is it worth the price?
Yes, if you value comfort, efficiency and reliability over brand image. It costs far less than a BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class and is cheaper to maintain. If prestige matters, you will find the German cabins more special.
Is a hybrid worth it over a diesel?
For city-heavy use, very much so. The hybrid runs on electric power at low speeds, which is where it saves most fuel. It also avoids diesel age limits in Delhi NCR. On long highway runs the advantage narrows, but the claimed 25.49 km/l is still hard to beat.
