Our verdict on the Urban Cruiser Hyryder

The Hyryder’s reason to exist is the strong hybrid. In city traffic it runs on electric power much of the time and the claimed 27.97 km/l is far ahead of the petrol, though it costs ₹2.3–3.1 lakh more than a matching petrol automatic and gives up a lot of boot space. If most of your driving is urban and you keep cars for several years, the hybrid is worth it. If you drive mainly on highways, the mild-hybrid petrol is cheaper and nearly as efficient at a steady speed. The mild-hybrid engine’s modest 103 PS is the weak point. Compare it closely with the Grand Vitara, which shares the hardware.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder: buy it for the hybrid, or think twice

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is built by Maruti Suzuki for Toyota and shares its hardware with the Grand Vitara. There are four powertrains: a 1,462 cc mild-hybrid petrol with about 103 PS, a factory CNG version of that engine, a 1,490 cc strong hybrid with 116 PS combined and an e-CVT, and an AWD version of the petrol automatic. Claimed figures are 21.12 km/l for the petrol manual, 20.58 km/l for the automatic, 26.6 km/kg on CNG and 27.97 km/l for the hybrid.

There are four trims: E, S, G (O) and V, with the CNG offered on S and G. Six airbags, ESC, climate control and push-button start are standard. S adds a touchscreen, rear camera and cruise control, G (O) adds the panoramic sunroof, LED projector lamps and a 9-inch screen, and V adds a 360-degree camera and ventilated front seats.

As of October 2026, ex-showroom prices run from ₹11.31 lakh for the E manual to ₹19.99 lakh for the V hybrid, before dual-tone paint or the limited Aero Black Edition. The petrol models have a 373-litre boot, while the hybrid’s battery cuts that to 225 litres, which matters more than the brochure suggests for family trips.

Which variant should you buy?

For city driving, the G (O) hybrid at ₹19.24 lakh, which gives you the sunroof, the larger screen and the hybrid’s efficiency. On a tighter budget, the S petrol automatic at ₹14.17 lakh. The S hybrid at ₹17.18 lakh gets you the efficiency with less equipment.

Is the strong hybrid worth the extra?

The S hybrid costs ₹3.01 lakh more than the S petrol automatic. At the claimed figures the hybrid uses about a quarter less fuel, and real gains are larger in heavy traffic. You need to drive a lot, or keep the car for many years, to recover the difference, and you give up about 150 litres of boot.

Petrol, CNG or hybrid?

CNG is the cheapest to run per kilometre and costs ₹89,000 more than the matching petrol manual, but it is manual only and the boot is smaller. The hybrid gives automatic convenience with low fuel use. The plain petrol is the simplest and cheapest to buy, and best for highway-heavy use.

Do you need AWD?

Only if you regularly drive in snow, on wet hill roads or on slippery tracks. The V AWD costs ₹1.05 lakh more than the V automatic and claims 19.39 km/l. For most buyers, front-wheel drive is enough.
