Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara
Maruti's midsize SUV is the one rival to the Creta and Seltos that offers petrol, factory CNG, a strong hybrid and all-wheel drive under one name. It suits buyers who want low running costs and Maruti's service network, and who are happy with modest performance from the 1.5 petrol.

Our verdict on the Grand Vitara
Zeta AT at ₹15.20 lakh is the sensible Grand Vitara. Buy the hybrid because you want it, not because it pays for itself. The strong hybrid is the nicest version to live with, and its claimed 27.97 km/l against 20.58 km/l for the petrol automatic saves real money per kilometre. It does not save enough to cover a premium of ₹2.8–3.2 lakh over the equivalent petrol automatic in a normal ownership period. At ₹95 a litre you recover about ₹1.22 a kilometre, so it takes roughly 2.6 lakh kilometres for the hybrid to come out ahead. CNG is the option that does pay back, and it is also the one Maruti restricts most, stopping at Zeta. The 1.5 petrol is adequate rather than quick, and the boot is small for the class.
Good things
- Three genuinely different powertrains rather than three tunes of one engine
- The CNG premium is only ₹80,000 to ₹90,000 over the equivalent petrol manual
- AllGrip all-wheel drive exists here, which almost nothing else in the segment offers
- Six airbags as standard and 210 mm of ground clearance
Could be better
- The strong hybrid's ₹2.8–3.2 lakh premium does not pay back on fuel in any realistic ownership period
- CNG stops at Zeta, so ventilated seats and the 360-degree camera are off the table if you want it
- AllGrip is locked to the Alpha petrol automatic, so you cannot have it with the hybrid
- 373-litre boot is small for a midsize SUV, and smaller still in the hybrid and CNG

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara: four powertrains, one sensible choice
The Grand Vitara is 4,345 mm long on a 2,600 mm wheelbase with 210 mm of ground clearance. It is sold through Nexa from ₹10.77 lakh to ₹19.77 lakh ex-showroom across 35 variants, many of which differ only by a panoramic sunroof or a black roof. It competes with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and its twin, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
The 1.5 petrol makes 103 PS and comes with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, claiming 21.11 km/l and 20.58 km/l. The same engine runs on factory CNG with a manual, claiming 26.6 km/kg. The strong hybrid uses a 1.5 three-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a combined 116 PS and claims 27.97 km/l with an e-CVT. AllGrip all-wheel drive is offered only with the Alpha petrol automatic.
Six airbags, keyless entry, push-button start and automatic climate control with rear vents are standard. Delta adds a 7-inch touchscreen, rear camera, cruise control and TPMS. Zeta brings the 9-inch screen, LED projector headlamps and a wireless charger. Alpha adds the 360-degree camera, head-up display, ventilated front seats and leatherette upholstery. The (O) versions add a panoramic sunroof.
Which variant should you buy?
The Zeta AT at ₹15,20,000. It has the automatic, the 9-inch screen, LED headlamps and a wireless charger. Alpha adds the 360-degree camera, head-up display and ventilated seats for ₹1.5 lakh more, which is reasonable if you want them. The (O) panoramic roof costs only ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 extra on the two-wheel-drive petrol trims, so take it if you like the idea.
Petrol, hybrid or CNG?
The hybrid is smooth, quiet and very efficient in town, but the Zeta+ hybrid costs ₹2.77 lakh more than the Zeta AT, and the fuel savings take many years to recover that. CNG costs ₹80,000 to ₹90,000 more than the petrol manual and pays back far sooner for high-mileage drivers. For most buyers who drive under 15,000 km a year, the petrol automatic is the simplest choice.
Do you need AllGrip all-wheel drive?
Only if you regularly drive on snow, sand or slippery hill roads. AllGrip adds about ₹1.35 lakh over the Alpha automatic and slightly lowers claimed economy to 19.38 km/l. It is not a hardcore off-road system, but it gives useful extra traction where two-wheel drive struggles.
How does it compare with the Hyundai Creta?
The Creta has stronger engines, including a turbo petrol and a diesel, a bigger boot and a richer cabin. The Grand Vitara wins on running costs with its CNG and hybrid options and offers all-wheel drive, which the Creta does not. If performance and space matter more, choose the Creta. If fuel bills and ground clearance matter more, the Grand Vitara is the better fit.
