Volkswagen Taigun

Volkswagen’s mid-size SUV, updated in 2026 with a new 8-speed automatic for the 1.0 TSI and a refreshed cabin. Every version is turbocharged, with the 150 PS 1.5 TSI kept for the GT Plus. It suits buyers who value a solid, sharp-driving car with six airbags as standard over the most rear space or features per rupee.

Our verdict on the Taigun

The Taigun’s appeal is in how it drives. The steering is precise, the body feels solid, and the 1.0 TSI is a willing engine that now pairs with a smoother 8-speed automatic in place of the old 6-speed. Six airbags are standard. The weak points are space and price: the rear seat is narrower than a Creta’s, and the 1.5 TSI only comes in the GT Plus trims at about ₹19 lakh, where a Creta or Seltos is fully loaded. We would buy a Highline or Highline Plus with the 1.0 TSI. The Skoda Kushaq is mechanically similar, so compare the two on price and dealer.

Good things

  • Every version is a turbo petrol, and the 1.0 TSI is lively
  • New 8-speed torque-converter automatic replaces the 6-speed
  • Six airbags and ESC across the range
  • Solid build and sharp handling for the class

Could be better

  • The 1.5 TSI is limited to the GT Plus trims at about ₹19 lakh
  • Rear seat is narrower than in the Creta or Seltos
  • No diesel, CNG or hybrid option
  • Panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats only from Topline, at ₹16 lakh

Volkswagen Taigun: the driver’s pick, best bought lower down

The Taigun is 4,221 mm long, built on the same platform as the Skoda Kushaq, and was updated in April 2026 with new lighting, a light bar and illuminated logo, a refreshed cabin and a new automatic gearbox. Its 385-litre boot expands to 1,405 litres with the rear seats folded, and six airbags and ESC are standard throughout.

The 1.0 TSI three-cylinder makes about 115 PS and 178 Nm and comes with a six-speed manual or a new eight-speed torque-converter automatic, which replaces the old six-speed. The 1.5 TSI four-cylinder makes 150 PS and 250 Nm, uses a seven-speed DSG, gets rear disc brakes and can shut down two cylinders when cruising.

The trims are Comfortline, Highline, Highline Plus, GT Line, Topline, GT Plus Chrome and GT Plus Sport. Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹11 lakh to ₹19.30 lakh. The sunroof arrives with Highline Plus, the panoramic roof and ventilated seats with Topline, and the 1.5 TSI only with the GT Plus trims.

Which variant should you buy?

The Highline at ₹12.70 lakh with the manual, or ₹13.80 lakh with the automatic. It has the features most people use daily. The Highline Plus adds a sunroof and digital cluster for ₹1.6 lakh. Topline is worth it only if you want ventilated seats and the panoramic roof.

1.0 TSI or 1.5 TSI?

The 1.0 TSI is enough for most owners and now has a smooth automatic. The 1.5 TSI is much quicker and suits frequent highway driving, but it costs at least ₹19 lakh in GT Plus form, about ₹1.8 lakh more than the Topline automatic.

Manual or automatic?

The 8-speed automatic costs ₹1.1 to ₹1.15 lakh more at Highline and Highline Plus. It is a torque converter, which tends to be more durable in heavy traffic than a dual-clutch. The 1.5 TSI comes only with the 7-speed DSG.

How does it compare with the Hyundai Creta?

The Creta has more rear space, a diesel option and more features at similar prices. The Taigun drives with more precision and feels more solidly built. If driving matters more than features, the Taigun; otherwise the Creta.
