Our verdict on the Golf
The Golf GTI is the real thing: 265 PS, 370 Nm from 1,600 rpm, a quick-shifting DSG and a claimed 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, wrapped in a hatchback with a 380-litre boot and four usable seats. Equipment is complete, from a panoramic sunroof to adaptive cruise and seven airbags. The problems are practical. At ₹50.91 lakh ex-showroom it costs as much as far larger luxury cars, 136 mm of ground clearance needs care on Indian speed breakers, and the car is sold in small imported batches. Volkswagen lists it as sold out, with the next lot expected around the end of 2026. Buy it if you want a fast car you can use every day and can wait. If you need space or comfort for the money, look elsewhere.
Good things
- 265 PS and 370 Nm with a fast seven-speed DSG
- Practical hatchback body with a 380-litre boot
- Fully loaded: panoramic sunroof, ADAS and seven airbags
- Five doors, four usable seats and three-zone climate control make it a genuine daily car
Could be better
- ₹50.91 lakh ex-showroom for a hatchback
- 136 mm ground clearance needs care on Indian roads
- Sold in small imported batches and currently sold out
- Low-profile 18-inch tyres and a firm ride on broken roads

Volkswagen Golf: a proper hot hatch, if you can get one
The Golf GTI is the only Golf Volkswagen sells in India. It is imported fully built in small batches and comes in one specification at ₹50.91 lakh ex-showroom. Volkswagen’s site currently lists it as sold out, and a second batch is reported for late 2026. Volkswagen does not sell the regular Golf here.
It uses a 2.0 TSI turbo petrol with 265 PS and 370 Nm, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG with an electronic front differential lock (XDS). Volkswagen claims 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Torque peaks from 1,600 rpm and holds to 4,500 rpm, so it pulls hard in any gear, and paddle shifters let you take control of the DSG.
The body is still a practical five-door hatch, 4,289 mm long with a 380-litre boot. Standard kit includes a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital cockpit, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, seven airbags and driver assists such as adaptive cruise and lane assist. The wheels are 18-inch diamond-turned alloys.
Is it worth the price?
As a driver’s car, yes; as transport, no. ₹50.91 lakh buys larger and more comfortable luxury SUVs. The GTI makes sense only if you value performance and handling in a compact, usable package, and plan to keep it.
Can you buy one now?
Not straight away. Volkswagen lists the GTI as sold out, and a second batch is reported for late 2026 at a possibly higher price. Speak to a dealer, ask for written confirmation of price and delivery timing, and avoid paying a large deposit early.
Will it cope with Indian roads?
With care. Ground clearance is 136 mm and the tyres are low profile, so steep ramps and large speed breakers need slow, angled approaches. On good roads and highways it is comfortable and very fast.
