Our verdict on the Tiguan
The Tiguan R-Line is a polished, well-built SUV with a strong petrol engine, all-wheel drive and a long list of safety and comfort features, including nine airbags and Level 2 ADAS. The problem is price. At ₹47.11 lakh for a five-seater petrol, it costs more than seven-seat ladder-frame SUVs with diesel engines, and it competes with entry models from luxury brands. Buy it if you specifically want a refined, car-like petrol SUV with AWD and a European feel. If you need seven seats, low running costs or strong resale, there are better uses of this money. Ask about discounts, as Volkswagen has offered large ones on this car before.
Good things
- Strong 204 PS turbo petrol with a quick DSG and all-wheel drive
- Nine airbags and Level 2 ADAS as standard
- Fully loaded single variant: no option-list games
- Refined, car-like to drive
Could be better
- ₹47.11 lakh is a lot for a five-seat petrol SUV
- No diesel or hybrid; claimed 12.58 km/l
- Five seats only
- Volkswagen’s dealer network is smaller than mass-market brands’
Volkswagen Tiguan colours and photos

Volkswagen Tiguan: one loaded variant at a premium price
The current Tiguan is the third-generation model, sold in India only as the R-Line. It uses a 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol with 204 PS and 320 Nm, a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Volkswagen claims 12.58 km/l. It is a five-seater, 4,539 mm long with a 2,680 mm wheelbase, so it is sized like a mid-size SUV rather than a large one.
Because there is one variant, everything is standard: nine airbags, Level 2 ADAS with lane assist and front assist, a panoramic sunroof, a digital cockpit, a 15-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, three-zone climate control, massage front seats, 19-inch alloys and wireless charging for two phones. There is no option list to work through.
Volkswagen lists it at ₹47.11 lakh ex-showroom as of October 2026, slightly below the ₹49 lakh it cost when it arrived in April 2025. Dealers have offered discounts of up to ₹3 lakh on it in the past, so the price you pay may be lower. Ask for the current offer in writing before you compare it with rivals.
Is it worth the price?
Only if the driving and build quality matter most to you. For less money you can buy a seven-seat diesel ladder-frame SUV, and for similar money you can look at entry luxury SUVs. The Tiguan’s strengths are refinement, a strong petrol with AWD and a full safety kit.
Which variant should you buy?
There is only one: the R-Line. It comes with all the equipment, so focus on the colour, the delivery timeline and the discount.
How expensive is it to run?
The claimed figure is 12.58 km/l, and owners report similar numbers. It is a petrol-only car with a turbocharged engine and AWD, so expect higher fuel bills than a diesel SUV of this size, and service costs in line with a European premium car.
