Volkswagen Tayron
Volkswagen's largest SUV in India, built on the same base as the Skoda Kodiaq, with a 204 PS 2.0 TSI petrol, 7-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. It comes as a five-seat Life or a seven-seat R-Line. It suits buyers who want a solid, quick and well-equipped petrol SUV and do not mind the running costs of a turbo-petrol.

Our verdict on the Tayron
The Tayron is a well-built, quick and very safe SUV. The 2.0 TSI pulls hard, the DSG is quick-witted and all-wheel drive is standard, which is rare at this price. Nine airbags come on both versions. The cabin is roomy and feels solid. But it is a petrol-only car with no official fuel-economy claim, and in daily use a 204 PS turbo-petrol in a heavy SUV will be thirsty. It also sits close to the Skoda Kodiaq, which shares its engine and platform, and to the Toyota Fortuner and diesel rivals that are cheaper to run. Buy the Tayron if you value driving ability, all-wheel drive and build quality over fuel costs. If you drive long distances every month, compare it with a Kodiaq or a diesel seven-seater before deciding.
Good things
- Strong 204 PS 2.0 TSI with quick 7-speed DSG
- 4MOTION all-wheel drive on both variants
- Nine airbags and a solid, well-built cabin
- Five-seat Life offers the same mechanicals for much less
Could be better
- Petrol only, with no official fuel-economy figure and likely high running costs
- 345-litre boot with all seven seats in use
- Expensive next to diesel seven-seaters
- Close in price and design to the Skoda Kodiaq, which shares its platform

Volkswagen Tayron: quick, safe and all-wheel drive, but petrol only
The Tayron is Volkswagen's flagship SUV in India, assembled locally on the same MQB platform as the Skoda Kodiaq. It uses a 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol making 204 PS and 320 Nm, a 7-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Volkswagen claims 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 224 km/h, and both versions use the same mechanicals.
There are two versions. The Life, added in July 2026 at ₹41.99 lakh ex-showroom, is a five-seater with nine airbags, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, ventilated and massaging front seats and a powered tailgate. The R-Line, at ₹47.74 lakh, seats seven and adds IQ.LIGHT matrix LED headlamps, a 15-inch touchscreen, a head-up display and Harman Kardon audio.
The Tayron is 4,792 mm long with a 2,789 mm wheelbase. With all three rows in use the boot is 345 litres, so a seven-seat family on holiday will need a roof box. The main cost of ownership will be fuel, as the turbo-petrol has no published economy figure and diesel is not offered. Budget for that before you compare it with diesel rivals.
Which variant should you buy?
If five seats are enough, the Life. It has the same engine, gearbox and all-wheel drive, nine airbags and most of the comfort features, for about ₹5.75 lakh less. Take the R-Line only if you need the third row or specifically want the matrix headlamps and head-up display.
How does it compare with the Skoda Kodiaq?
They share the platform and the 2.0 TSI with all-wheel drive, so the driving experience is similar. Compare the equipment, seating layout and final prices directly, as the two brands often run different offers. Then choose on the deal and on which dealer and workshop you trust more.
Is it worth the price?
For buyers who want a fast, safe, all-wheel-drive petrol SUV, it is good value at the Life's price. For a family that mostly drives in the city or covers long distances, a diesel or hybrid seven-seater will cost much less to run.
Is the third row usable?
On the R-Line it is suitable for children and for adults on short journeys. With the third row up, luggage space drops to 345 litres. If you regularly carry seven adults, a larger MPV makes more sense.
