Toyota Fortuner
Toyota’s full-size, body-on-frame seven-seater and the default choice in its class for buyers who value durability and resale. A 2.8 diesel with up to 500 Nm powers most versions, a 2.7 petrol automatic opens the range, and 4x4 versions get low range. Prices run from ₹34.76 lakh to ₹50.46 lakh. It suits people who cover long distances on mixed roads and keep their cars for many years.

Our verdict on the Fortuner
The Fortuner is not the most modern or best-equipped SUV at this price, but it is the one people trust to run for a decade, hold its value and be fixable almost anywhere. The diesel is strong and the body-on-frame build copes with rough roads. Our pick is the 4x2 diesel automatic: it covers what most owners actually do. The 4x4 only makes sense if you go off tarmac regularly, and the GR-S at over ₹50 lakh is mostly an appearance package. If you want more cabin and more features and can spend about ₹5 lakh more than our pick, the MG Majestor is the alternative to look at, with less certainty on long-term ownership.
Good things
- Strong reputation for durability and resale value
- Strong 2.8 diesel with 500 Nm in automatic form
- Proper 4x4 with low range on 4x4 versions
- Toyota’s service network reaches far beyond big cities
Could be better
- Less equipment than newer rivals at the same price
- Diesel manual gets only 420 Nm, less than the automatic
- Third row is tight for adults
- GR-S top version costs over ₹50 lakh for mostly cosmetic changes

Toyota Fortuner: the safe choice, priced like one
The Fortuner is Toyota’s ladder-frame seven-seater. Most versions use the 2,755 cc diesel, which makes 204 PS with 420 Nm when paired with the six-speed manual and 500 Nm with the six-speed automatic. A 2,694 cc petrol is offered only as a 4x2 automatic. The 4x4 automatic now comes with a 48V mild-hybrid system, sold as the Neo Drive.
The line-up is short. There are 4x2 petrol and diesel automatics, a 4x2 diesel manual, a 4x4 diesel manual, the Neo Drive 4x4 automatic, and the GR-S at the top. The Leader Edition, launched in October 2026, is a styling pack on the 4x2 diesel. The Legender is a separate model with different styling.
As of October 2026, ex-showroom prices run from ₹34.76 lakh to ₹50.46 lakh after a price rise of ₹60,000–87,000 in May 2026. Newer rivals offer more screens, more driver aids and more comfort features for similar money. With the Fortuner you are paying for engineering and reputation more than features, and that is the honest trade-off.
Which variant should you buy?
The 4x2 diesel automatic at ₹37.61 lakh. It gets the stronger 500 Nm version of the diesel and the gearbox most owners prefer. Only step up to 4x4 if you need it, and skip the Leader Edition and GR-S unless you value the styling.
Petrol or diesel?
Diesel for nearly everyone. It is far stronger, better suited to a heavy body-on-frame SUV, and the one that holds its value. The petrol is cheaper to buy by ₹2.85 lakh against the diesel automatic, but it only makes sense for low annual mileage.
Do you need the 4x4?
Most Fortuners never leave tarmac. If you drive in the hills, on snow, sand or broken tracks, the 4x4 with low range is worth it. The 4x4 manual is ₹1.74 lakh more than the 4x2 diesel automatic; the 4x4 automatic Neo Drive is ₹5.51 lakh more.
How does it compare with the MG Majestor?
The Majestor is bigger, more powerful and comes with Level 2 ADAS and more comfort features. Its 4x2 costs ₹4.88 lakh more than the Fortuner 4x2 diesel automatic, but slightly less than the Fortuner Neo Drive 4x4 automatic. The Fortuner’s case is reliability, resale and service reach. If you keep cars for many years, that still counts for a lot.
