Our verdict on the Virtus

The Virtus is a well-built sedan that drives better than most cars at its price, and its five-star Global NCAP rating is reassuring. The 1.0 TSI is willing and the six-speed automatic is smooth, so most buyers need go no further than the Highline Plus. The 1.5 TSI GT Plus is fast and engaging, but at nearly ₹19 lakh it asks a lot. The cabin is not as feature-rich as a Hyundai Verna’s, there is no diesel or CNG, and rear-seat space is good rather than class-leading. If you value how a car drives and feels on the highway, the Virtus is a strong choice.

Good things

  • Five-star Global NCAP rating and six airbags as standard
  • 521-litre boot, among the largest in the class
  • Punchy turbo engines, with a quick DSG on the 1.5
  • Highline Plus offers a sunroof and digital cockpit at a fair price

Could be better

  • Petrol only: no diesel, hybrid or CNG
  • Rear-seat space is good rather than class-leading
  • 1.5 TSI only in the top GT Plus trims, close to ₹19 lakh
  • Base Comfortline is plain inside

Volkswagen Virtus: a driver’s sedan with a big boot

The Virtus is Volkswagen’s mid-size sedan, sharing its platform with the Skoda Slavia. It is 4,561 mm long with a 2,651 mm wheelbase, 179 mm of ground clearance and a 521-litre boot. It holds a five-star Global NCAP rating for adult and child occupants. Prices start at ₹10.71 lakh for the Comfortline manual.

Two turbo-petrol engines are offered. The 1.0 TSI makes 115 PS with a six-speed manual or automatic, claimed at 20.8 km/l and 18.45 km/l. The 1.5 TSI makes 150 PS with a seven-speed DSG and claims 19.62 km/l. Prices run from ₹10.71 lakh to ₹19.20 lakh ex-showroom. There is no diesel, CNG or hybrid version.

Every Virtus has six airbags, ESC, hill hold and tyre-pressure warning. Highline adds the 10.1-inch touchscreen, Highline Plus the sunroof and digital cockpit, Topline ventilated seats and LED headlamps, and the GT trims sportier styling, with the 1.5 TSI reserved for GT Plus. The 150-unit Anniversary Edition is based on the GT Plus Sport.

Which variant should you buy?

Highline Plus. Over Highline it adds the sunroof, digital cockpit, push-button start, auto headlamps and rain-sensing wipers for ₹29,000-40,000. Topline ES adds ventilated seats and LED headlamps for about ₹1.25 lakh more, which suits hot cities. GT Line is mainly a styling pack.

1.0 TSI or 1.5 TSI?

The 1.0 TSI is enough for most people and is cheaper to buy. The 1.5 TSI is genuinely quick and the DSG is sharp, but it comes only in GT Plus trims costing ₹18.85 lakh or more. Choose it if driving pleasure matters to you.

Manual or automatic?

On the 1.0 TSI the automatic is a six-speed torque converter costing ₹90,000-1.20 lakh more depending on trim. It is smooth and well suited to city traffic. The 1.5 TSI comes only with the DSG.

How does it compare with the Hyundai Verna?

The Verna offers more features, including ADAS, and a wider engine choice. The Virtus feels more solid, drives with more polish and has a bigger boot. Pick on what matters more to you: equipment or the way the car drives.
