Honda City
Honda's long-running midsize sedan, updated in May 2026, with a 4.58-metre body, a 506-litre boot and a rear seat that most SUVs at this price can't match. It suits buyers who value ride comfort, refinement and a smooth automatic over ground clearance, and the e:HEV hybrid suits high-mileage city drivers.

Our verdict on the City
The City remains the sensible sedan to buy. It is roomy in the back, rides well, has a large boot and a proven, refined 1.5 petrol, and the 2026 update adds the features the old car lacked, such as a 360-degree camera and ventilated seats. Six airbags come with every variant and ADAS from the V. Our advice is to stop at the V or ZX, because the ZX+ adds comforts that cost close to ₹1 lakh. The e:HEV is efficient and smooth, but at ₹21.36 lakh it costs about ₹4 lakh more than the ZX+ CVT, so it makes sense only if you drive a lot in the city. If you need ground clearance for bad roads or want a turbo engine, the Slavia and Virtus are quicker, and a midsize SUV sits higher.
Good things
- Spacious rear seat and a 506-litre boot
- Six airbags and TPMS on every variant, Level 2 ADAS from the V
- Smooth, proven 1.5 petrol with a well-matched CVT option
- Strong hybrid option claiming 27.26 km/l
Could be better
- The non-turbo 121 PS engine has only 145 Nm and feels flat next to the turbo Slavia and Virtus
- The e:HEV is only sold as the top ZX+ and costs about ₹4 lakh more than the petrol CVT
- A low-slung sedan needs care on speed breakers and broken roads
- Base SV is manual only, so the cheapest automatic is the ₹14.51 lakh V CVT

Honda City: the comfortable, sensible sedan
The fifth-generation City got a facelift in May 2026, with a new front end, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 360-degree camera and ventilated front seats. Prices run from ₹12 lakh to about ₹21.36 lakh ex-showroom across eight variants. The body is 4,583 mm long with a 2,600 mm wheelbase, and the 506-litre boot is one of the largest in this price band.
Two powertrains are offered. The 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol makes 121 PS and 145 Nm, with a six-speed manual or a CVT, and claims 17.77 km/l (manual) or 17.97 km/l (CVT). The e:HEV strong hybrid pairs a 1.5 petrol engine with two electric motors for a combined 126 PS and 253 Nm, claims 27.26 km/l, and is only available in the top ZX+ trim.
Every City has six airbags, stability control, hill-start assist, TPMS, LED projector headlamps and automatic climate control. From the V upwards you get Honda Sensing, the brand's Level 2 ADAS, plus wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The ZX adds a sunroof and the larger screen, and the ZX+ adds ventilated seats and the 360-degree camera.
Which variant should you buy?
The V. At ₹13.51 lakh for the manual it brings the ADAS suite, wireless phone mirroring, alloys and keyless entry, which are the features most owners use. The ZX is worth ₹1.96 lakh more only if you want the sunroof, 8-speaker audio and wireless charger. The ZX+ adds ventilated seats and a 360-degree camera for another ₹89,000, which is a lot for two features.
Petrol or hybrid?
The e:HEV claims 27.26 km/l against 17.97 km/l for the petrol CVT, and it is smoother and quicker in town. It also costs about ₹4 lakh more than the ZX+ CVT. At ₹100 a litre, the saving is roughly ₹1.90 per kilometre, so you need to cover around two lakh kilometres before the fuel savings cover the premium. Buy it if you drive a lot in the city and keep cars for a long time, not to save money in three years.
Manual or CVT?
The CVT costs ₹1 lakh more at every trim and claims slightly better economy than the manual. It is smooth and suits the relaxed nature of the engine in traffic. On the V it also adds paddle shifters and remote engine start. Unless you mostly drive on the highway and enjoy changing gears, we would pay for the CVT.
How does it compare with the Skoda Slavia and VW Virtus?
The Slavia and Virtus offer turbo petrol engines that are noticeably quicker, especially the 1.5 TSI. The City counters with a more spacious, comfortable cabin, Level 2 ADAS from the mid trim, a hybrid option and Honda's reputation for reliability and resale. If you enjoy driving, test the Germans. If comfort and low running costs matter more, the City is the safer buy.
