Our verdict on the Dzire
The Dzire used to come with the advice to skip the base car because it lacked safety equipment. That no longer applies: the LXi has the same six airbags, ESP and hill hold as the range-topper. What the LXi misses is comfort, and the VXi fixes that for ₹96,500, which makes it the sweet spot. The 1.2 petrol is modest at 82.93 PS but very efficient, and the CNG, offered even with an automatic, makes the Dzire one of the cheapest cars to run in its class. The ZXi+ adds a sunroof and 360-degree camera, but at nearly ₹9.5 lakh for the automatic it is worth checking what larger cars that money buys.
Good things
- Six airbags, ESP, hill hold and seat-belt reminders on every variant
- 382-litre boot on the petrol, large for a sub-four-metre sedan
- A CNG automatic is offered, which few rivals match
- Very efficient: 26.13 km/l claimed for the petrol AMT
Could be better
- 82.93 PS is modest, and the CNG drops to 69.75 PS
- No sunroof below ZXi+, and no turbo engine at all
- Maruti does not publish a boot figure for the CNG
- AMT is less smooth than the CVTs and torque converters some rivals use

Maruti Suzuki Dzire: full safety kit from the base variant up
The current Dzire is a compact sedan in its own right rather than a Swift with a boot, with its own styling and cabin. It is 3,995 mm long with a 2,450 mm wheelbase, 163 mm of ground clearance and a 382-litre boot on the petrol, and it remains the default choice for families and fleet buyers alike. It was the seventh best-selling car in India in August 2026.
There is one engine, a 1,197 cc three-cylinder petrol making 82.93 PS and 112.4 Nm, offered with a five-speed manual or AMT. In CNG mode it makes 69.75 PS and 101.8 Nm. Claimed economy is 25.15 km/l for the petrol manual, 26.13 km/l for the AMT, 35.63 km/kg for the CNG manual and 36.47 km/kg for the CNG automatic.
The trims are LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+, with CNG on VXi and ZXi. Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹6.31 lakh to ₹9.54 lakh. Six airbags, ESP, hill hold and seat-belt reminders for every seat are standard throughout, so moving up the range buys comfort and convenience rather than extra safety equipment.
Which variant should you buy?
The VXi manual at ₹7.27 lakh. The LXi is safe but sparse, and the VXi adds the touchscreen, remote app, over-the-air updates and rear armrest. The ZXi’s LED lights, alloys and keyless start are nice but not essential, and the ZXi+ sunroof pushes the price close to ₹9 lakh.
Petrol or CNG?
CNG costs about ₹91,000 more at VXi and ZXi. It loses some power and boot space but claims 35.63 km/kg. If you drive more than about 1,200 km a month, mostly in town, the CNG usually pays back within a few years. For lighter use, stay with petrol.
Manual or AMT?
The AMT costs ₹45,000 more on the petrol and ₹35,000 more on the CNG, and it claims slightly better economy than the manual. It shifts more slowly than a torque converter, but for city driving it removes clutch work at a modest price.
How does it compare with the Honda Amaze?
The Amaze offers a CVT automatic, which is smoother than the Dzire’s AMT, and has a 416-litre boot. The Dzire is cheaper, more efficient and offers a factory-fitted CNG, including one with an automatic. For low running costs the Dzire wins.
