Our verdict on the Aura
The Aura is a sensible, unflashy small sedan. Every variant has six airbags and stability control, the 1.2 petrol is smooth in town, and the factory CNG is a genuine money-saver for people who drive a lot. Where it falls short is the engine's modest output on the highway, the AMT being limited to two trims, and a cabin that is starting to feel dated next to the newer Honda Amaze and Maruti Dzire. The Dzire in particular offers a sunroof, a 5-star Global NCAP rating and better claimed economy at similar money. We would buy the Aura if a Hyundai dealer is close, you want CNG with a usable boot, or you can get a good discount. Otherwise, put the Dzire on the same test drive list.
Good things
- Six airbags and stability control as standard across the range
- Factory-fitted CNG available from the cheapest trim
- Smooth, quiet 1.2 petrol that suits city driving
- Rear camera, touchscreen and climate control at a sensible SX price
Could be better
- 83 PS feels stretched with a full load on the highway, and CNG drops it to 69 PS
- AMT only on two trims, and no automatic with CNG
- Cabin and equipment look dated next to the latest Dzire and Amaze
- Claimed petrol economy of 17 km/l is lower than key rivals

Hyundai Aura: safe basics, sensible prices
The Aura is Hyundai's sedan under four metres, based on the Grand i10 Nios hatchback and sold as a five-seater. It uses a 1.2-litre petrol with 83 PS and a five-speed manual or AMT, and a factory-fitted CNG version that drops output to 69 PS. Prices run from ₹6 lakh for the base E to about ₹8.67 lakh for the SX CNG, ex-showroom.
Safety basics are covered across the range. Every Aura has six airbags and electronic stability control, which was not true of this class a few years ago. The useful features arrive at the SX: an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear camera, push-button start, automatic climate control and alloy wheels. The SX(O) adds wireless phone mirroring and cruise control.
The line-up is longer than it needs to be, with a Corporate trim and three fuel and gearbox mixes. Make the fuel decision first, then pick the trim. If you run more than about 1,500 km a month, the CNG starts to make financial sense; otherwise the petrol manual is simpler and keeps the full boot. Ask for the exact list price, as sources differ by a few thousand rupees.
Which variant should you buy?
For petrol buyers, the SX manual is where the car feels complete: touchscreen with phone mirroring, rear camera, climate control and alloys. The SX(O) is worth it only if you want wireless connectivity and cruise control. For a CNG, the S CNG keeps the price down, and the SX CNG adds the same comforts as the petrol SX.
Petrol or CNG?
CNG costs about ₹90,000 more trim for trim and gives up some power and boot space to the cylinder. It pays back if you drive a lot, especially in cities with a good CNG pump network. If your monthly running is low, or you often travel loaded on highways, stay with petrol.
Manual or automatic?
The AMT is offered on the S and the SX Plus only, and there is no automatic with CNG. The AMT adds about ₹41,000 on the S. It is smooth enough in traffic, but expect a slight pause between shifts when you want to overtake.
How does it compare with the Maruti Dzire?
The Dzire has a newer cabin, a sunroof on higher trims, a 5-star Global NCAP rating and much better claimed economy. Both have six airbags as standard. The Aura's case rests on its smooth engine, a slightly lower starting price and the discounts Hyundai dealers often give. Drive both, and let the final ex-showroom offer decide.
