Our verdict on the Grand i10 Nios
The Grand i10 Nios is still one of the nicest small hatchbacks to live with. The cabin is well made for the price, the four-cylinder engine is smoother than the three-cylinders in many rivals, and six airbags come with every variant. The line-up is cluttered with Corporate and Vibe special editions, so focus on Sportz and Sportz (O), which carry the features that matter. The weak points are an age that shows next to the newer Swift, a small 260-litre boot and modest performance once loaded up. CNG and AMT are not offered together, so automatic buyers have to stay with petrol. If you want more room and a fresher design for similar money, test the Swift and Tiago before you sign.
Good things
- Six airbags and tyre pressure monitoring on every variant
- Smooth 1.2 four-cylinder petrol, with manual, AMT or CNG
- Twin-cylinder CNG tanks leave usable boot space
- Good cabin quality and equipment for under ₹8 lakh
Could be better
- 260-litre boot is small even by hatchback standards
- No CNG with the AMT gearbox
- Ageing design next to the newer Swift; next generation not expected soon
- Too many special editions with near-identical prices make the line-up confusing

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: the well-finished city hatchback
The Grand i10 Nios is Hyundai's entry hatchback, priced from ₹5.60 lakh to ₹8.04 lakh ex-showroom across 15 variants. It is 3,815 mm long with a 2,450 mm wheelbase and a 260-litre boot. It competes with the Maruti Swift, Tata Tiago and Maruti Wagon R, and leans on cabin quality and a refined engine rather than space.
Every version uses a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol making 83 PS and about 114 Nm, with a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT. Four cylinders are unusual at this price, and the engine is noticeably smoother than the three-cylinder units in some rivals. The factory CNG version runs at 69 PS and 95 Nm on gas and uses two smaller cylinders under the boot floor, so you keep some luggage space. CNG is manual only.
Six airbags and tyre pressure monitoring are standard. Magna adds rear AC vents and power windows all round, Sportz brings the 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a rear camera, and Sportz (O) adds alloys, keyless entry, cruise control and automatic climate control. The Vibe editions add a dashcam and a black-and-red interior, and the top Asta adds wireless phone mirroring and a wireless charger.
Which variant should you buy?
The Sportz (O). At ₹7.13 lakh for the manual it has the touchscreen, rear camera, alloys, keyless entry, cruise control and auto AC. The Asta costs ₹39,000 more for wireless phone mirroring, a wireless charger and a dashcam, which are nice but not essential. Avoid the Era unless the budget is fixed, as it lacks rear AC vents and a music system.
Petrol or CNG?
CNG costs about ₹94,000 more than the equivalent petrol manual at Magna and ₹88,000 more at Sportz. It pays back if you drive more than about 1,000 km a month and have a CNG station nearby. The twin-cylinder layout keeps part of the boot usable, but you lose power on gas and there is no CNG automatic. For light city use, the petrol is simpler.
Manual or AMT?
The AMT costs between ₹52,000 and ₹61,000 more than the manual at the same trim. It is not as smooth as a torque converter, but it takes the effort out of stop-start traffic and is reliable. The cheapest AMT is now the Corporate at ₹7.17 lakh, as the Magna AMT has been dropped. For city driving, we think the AMT is worth it.
How does it compare with the Maruti Swift?
The current Swift is newer, claims better economy from its three-cylinder engine, and also offers CNG and six airbags as standard. The Nios has a smoother four-cylinder engine and a better-finished cabin. Prices overlap closely, so drive both. If running costs come first, the Swift edges it. If refinement and cabin feel matter more, the Nios is the one.
