Our verdict on the i20
Every i20 on the standard price list now uses the 1.2 petrol, with 82 PS in manual form and 114.7 Nm. The 1.0 turbo lives on only in the separately priced i20 N Line, so a salesperson showing you an Asta as the ‘turbo i20’ is showing you the wrong car. What the i20 does well is space and finish: the 311-litre boot is the best in the class by a clear margin, and six airbags and stability control are standard. The Sportz (O) manual at ₹8.39 lakh is the one to buy. The IVT is where the money goes, with a premium of ₹1.01 lakh at Sportz and ₹1.19 lakh at Asta (O). Skip it unless your daily traffic really makes the choice for you.
Good things
- 311-litre boot, the largest in the segment by a clear margin
- Six airbags, ESC and hill-start assist are standard from the ₹5.99 lakh Era
- Fifteen variants that climb in sensible, readable steps
- Knight and dual-tone are flat cosmetic add-ons of ₹9,000 and ₹15,000
Could be better
- 82 PS is the only engine on the standard list; the turbo is a separately priced N Line
- The IVT premium is inconsistent, from ₹92,000 to ₹1.19 lakh for the same gearbox
- The Magna IVT has been dropped, so the cheapest automatic now starts at ₹8.86 lakh
- Claimed mileage for the manual is modest at 16 km/l

Hyundai i20: the big-boot hatch with one sensible engine
The i20 is Hyundai’s premium hatchback, a rival to the Maruti Baleno and Tata Altroz. It is just under four metres long with a 2,580 mm wheelbase and a 311-litre boot. Prices run from ₹5.99 lakh for the Era to ₹10.68 lakh for the Asta (O) Knight dual-tone IVT, ex-showroom. Hyundai offers it in seven trims, with Knight and dual-tone versions on top.
There is now only one engine on the regular i20: a 1.2 petrol with 82 PS in the manual and 88 PS with the IVT automatic. The 1.0 turbo has moved to the i20 N Line, which is priced as its own model. The IVT is offered only on Sportz, Sportz (O) and Asta (O) trims. Claimed mileage is 16 km/l for the manual and 20 km/l for the IVT.
Safety is strong across the range. Six airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist and rear parking sensors are standard from the Era. The Sportz adds a rear camera and automatic climate control, the Sportz (O) adds the sunroof and Bose audio, and the Asta (O) brings the 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital dials.
Which variant should you buy?
The Sportz (O) manual at ₹8.39 lakh. It has the sunroof, Bose speakers, push-button start, camera and auto AC, which covers what most owners use. The Asta adds LED headlamps and alloys for ₹32,000 more; the Asta (O) adds the big screen and digital dials for another ₹54,000. Both are nice but not essential.
Manual or IVT automatic?
The IVT is smooth in traffic and claims 20 km/l against the manual’s 16 km/l, though owners report the opposite in daily use. It costs ₹1.01 lakh more at Sportz, ₹92,000 at Sportz (O) and ₹1.19 lakh at Asta (O). If you mostly drive in heavy traffic it is worth it; otherwise the manual suits the 82 PS engine better.
Is there still a turbo i20?
Not on the regular price list. The 1.0 turbo petrol is sold in the i20 N Line, which has its own pricing, sportier suspension and styling. If you want more pace than the 1.2 gives, look at the N Line rather than any regular i20 trim.
How does it compare with the Maruti Baleno?
The Baleno is cheaper to run and offers a CNG version, which the i20 does not. The i20 answers with a bigger boot, a better-finished cabin and features such as Bose audio lower down the range. If fuel cost matters most, choose the Baleno; if space and finish matter more, the i20.
