Our verdict on the Altroz

On paper the Altroz is one of the safest cars in its class, and it is the most flexible. A 5-star Bharat NCAP rating from a ₹6 lakh starting price is a strong headline, and every variant has six airbags and ESC. The twin-cylinder CNG is clever and is the rare CNG offered with an automatic. But the CNG still cuts the boot from 345 to 210 litres, which you only notice on the first long trip. The 1.2 petrol is modest once the car is loaded, and the 27-variant line-up makes choosing harder than it should be. Our advice is simple: the petrol manual Creative S at ₹8.45 lakh is the one to buy. Take the CNG only after measuring what you actually carry, and choose the diesel only if you drive long distances, because Tata is one of very few still offering it in a hatchback.

Tata Altroz: safe, flexible, and a long list to choose from

The Altroz was facelifted in 2025 and is now sold across five trims (Smart, Pure, Creative, Accomplished and Accomplished+), with S versions that add a sunroof. You can have a 1.2 petrol with a manual, AMT or 6-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA), a 1.5 diesel manual, or a 1.2 twin-cylinder CNG with a manual or AMT. That makes 27 versions from ₹6 lakh to ₹10.90 lakh ex-showroom.

Safety is the headline. The Altroz has a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, and every variant has six airbags and electronic stability control. The Pure adds wireless phone mirroring, a rear camera and cruise control. The Creative adds a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 360-degree camera and LED headlamps, and the Accomplished trims add 16-inch alloys, wireless charging and tyre pressure monitoring.

The twin-cylinder CNG puts two smaller tanks under the boot floor rather than one large tank in the boot, so the floor stays flat. Even so, the boot drops from 345 to 210 litres. Check that before choosing CNG, and remember that the diesel suits long-distance drivers better. Five paint colours are offered.

Which variant should you buy?

The petrol manual Creative S at ₹8.45 lakh. It has the 10.25-inch touchscreen, 360-degree camera, LED headlamps and sunroof. The Pure at ₹7.15 lakh is the budget choice. The Accomplished trims add comfort items but little you need.

Petrol, diesel or CNG?

Petrol suits most buyers. CNG costs ₹1.05 lakh more on the Creative S and saves a lot on fuel, but the boot shrinks from 345 to 210 litres. The diesel, rated at 23.64 km/l, makes sense for regular highway driving, and few hatchbacks still offer one.

AMT or DCA?

The AMT is cheaper and is also offered with CNG, but shifts are slower. The 6-speed DCA is smoother and quicker, and starts at the Creative S for ₹9.65 lakh, ₹63,000 more than the Creative S AMT. For heavy city traffic, the DCA is the better gearbox if the budget allows.

How does it compare with the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20?

The Altroz has the strongest safety rating and the only diesel and twin-cylinder CNG options. The Baleno is more fuel efficient and has a lighter feel, and the i20 has a more polished cabin. If safety and powertrain choice matter most, the Altroz is the one to beat.
