Tata’s sub-four-metre SUV, and one of the few that offers a turbo petrol, a diesel and a turbocharged CNG. Six airbags and ESP are standard, and the twin-cylinder CNG keeps a usable boot. Our verdict on the Nexon
The Nexon is the rare compact SUV with three genuinely different powertrains. The 120 PS turbo petrol suits most people, the diesel is the calm choice for long loaded runs, and the CNG keeps its turbo and much of its boot, which makes it worth buying on merit. Safety is strong, with six airbags and ESP across the range. The problem is the menu: trims, plus signs, S and PS sunroof packs, dual-clutch DCA versions and Dark and CAMO editions add up to more than 80 versions. Decide which features you want, usually the sunroof or the 360-degree camera, and ask for the cheapest version that has them. For most buyers that is the Creative.

Tata Nexon: three real engine choices, one confusing price list
The Nexon is 3,995 mm long with a 2,498 mm wheelbase, 208 mm of ground clearance and a 382-litre boot. It has been Tata’s most important car for years, and the current version offers more fuel choices than almost any rival: turbo petrol, diesel and CNG, with manual, AMT and dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. Six airbags and ESP are standard.
The 1.2 turbo petrol makes about 120 PS and claims 17.44 km/l with the manual. The 1.5 diesel claims 23.23 km/l with the manual and 24.08 km/l with the AMT. The CNG uses the same turbo petrol engine with two 30-litre cylinders under the boot floor, makes 170 Nm in gas mode and claims 17.44 km/kg. The petrol automatics claim 17.18 km/l (AMT) and 17.01 km/l (DCA).
The trims are Smart, Smart+, Pure+, Creative, Creative+ and Fearless+, with S (sunroof) and PS (panoramic sunroof) packs, and DCA marking the petrol dual-clutch automatic. Dark, Red Dark and CAMO editions add more versions on top. Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹7.40 lakh to about ₹14.52 lakh.
Which variant should you buy?
The Creative. It adds the 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, alloy wheels, keyless start and cruise control to the Pure+, for about ₹1.1 lakh. Add the S pack only if you want a sunroof, and avoid Fearless+ unless you specifically want ventilated seats and leatherette.
Petrol, diesel or CNG?
For most owners, the turbo petrol. For long highway runs with a full car, the diesel. For high city mileage, the CNG, which costs about ₹1 lakh more than the petrol at Creative but keeps its turbo and much of its boot. Choose the engine on your monthly running, not the test drive.
AMT or DCA?
The petrol AMT is the cheaper automatic and is offered lower down the range. The DCA is a 7-speed dual-clutch, smoother and quicker, from Creative upwards at about ₹55,000 over the AMT. The diesel automatic is an AMT only, but it is the most economical version of the car.
How does it compare with the Mahindra XUV 3XO?
The XUV 3XO has stronger petrol engines and a longer wheelbase. The Nexon offers a turbo CNG, a larger 382-litre boot and a dual-clutch option. Compare the specific trims, as both ranges are long and easy to over-buy in.
