Our verdict on the Harrier

The Harrier gives you a lot of SUV for the money. It is wide, comfortable on bad roads and well equipped, and the arrival of the 1.5 turbo petrol in 2026 has cut the entry price and given buyers a choice beyond the diesel. Both engines make 170 PS. Our advice is to stop at Pure X or Adventure X+, which already have the sunroof, 360-degree camera and large screens. Fearless trims add ventilated seats, JBL audio and Level 2 ADAS, but push the price past ₹20 lakh. The Dark, Red Dark and Stealth editions are paint and trim packages, not better cars. The weak points are a cabin that is not as roomy as the body size suggests, no published mileage claim for the petrol yet, and Tata's uneven service experience in some cities. Test drive both engines before deciding.

Tata Harrier: a lot of SUV, if you stop in the middle

The Harrier is a five-seat SUV that is 4,605 mm long and 1,922 mm wide on a 2,741 mm wheelbase, with a boot of about 445 litres. It shares its platform with the seven-seat Safari. Prices run from ₹13 lakh to ₹26.11 lakh ex-showroom across 58 variants, once Dark, Red Dark and Stealth editions are counted.

Two engines are offered. The 2.0 Kryotec diesel makes 170 PS and 350 Nm and claims 16.8 km/l with either gearbox. The 1.5 Hyperion turbo petrol, added in January 2026, also makes 170 PS, with 280 Nm, and lowers the entry price by about ₹1 lakh. Tata has not yet published a mileage claim for it. Both engines come with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

Every Harrier has six airbags, ESP, automatic climate control and a digital driver display. Pure X adds the panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, 10.25-inch screens and cruise control. Adventure X+ adds an electronic parking brake with auto hold and Level 1 ADAS. Fearless X brings ventilated seats and dual-zone climate, Fearless X+ adds Level 2 ADAS and a powered tailgate, and Fearless Ultra adds a 14.5-inch screen and a dashcam.

Which variant should you buy?

Pure X. At ₹16.40 lakh for the petrol manual it already has the features most buyers want from a Harrier. Adventure X+ is worth the extra if you want an automatic with auto hold. Go to Fearless X only if ventilated seats and dual-zone climate matter to you. Skip the Dark and Stealth editions unless you specifically want the look, as they add ₹45,000 to ₹70,000 for paint and trim.

Petrol or diesel?

The diesel costs about ₹1–1.3 lakh more at most trims and has 70 Nm more torque, which helps on highways and with a full load. It also has a published mileage claim of 16.8 km/l. The petrol is quieter and cheaper to buy, and suits buyers who drive under about 12,000 km a year. Both make 170 PS.

Manual or automatic?

Both engines are offered with a six-speed torque-converter automatic, which suits the Harrier's relaxed character. It costs about ₹1.5 lakh more than the manual at most trims. We would pay for it if most of your driving is in cities.

How does it compare with Mahindra's large SUVs?

Mahindra's SUVs offer more powerful petrol engines and a seven-seat option in the same body. The Harrier is a five-seater with a more imposing design and a lot of equipment at lower trims. If you need seven seats, look at the Safari or the Mahindra. If five seats are enough, the Harrier is strong value at Pure X and Adventure X+.
