Our verdict on the Nexon EV
The Nexon EV is still the default compact electric SUV, and with the 45 kWh battery it is a car you can use beyond the city. Tata's claimed 489 km should translate into a comfortable real-world range for most commutes and the odd highway run, and the lifetime battery warranty on the 45 kWh for first owners removes a major worry. Safety is strong, with six airbags and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. The weaknesses are a busy variant list, a ride that can feel firm at low speeds, and the 30 kWh versions, whose 275 km claim is too short for anything but city use. Skip the MR, buy a 45 kWh car, and spend on the Fearless or Empowered rather than the Dark editions. Compare it with the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, which is quicker but has a smaller battery.
Good things
- 45 kWh battery with a 489 km claimed range
- Six airbags and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating
- Lifetime battery warranty for first owners of the 45 kWh
- Well-equipped top trims with ventilated seats, sunroof and V2L
Could be better
- 30 kWh versions claim just 275 km, which limits them to city use
- Eight variants and special editions make choosing harder than it should be
- Ride can feel firm over broken roads at low speed
- Top trims approach ₹18 lakh, close to larger electric SUVs

Tata Nexon EV: the default compact EV, best with the big battery
The Nexon EV comes with two battery packs. The 30 kWh Medium Range (MR) is sold in Creative Plus and Fearless trims and claims 275 km on the MIDC cycle. The 45 kWh pack, offered from the Creative 45 up to the Empowered Plus A 45, claims 489 km. Prices run from ₹12.49 lakh to ₹17.89 lakh ex-showroom.
Every version has six airbags, and the Nexon holds a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. The Fearless trims add 10.25-inch screens and a rear camera; the Empowered 45 adds a sunroof, a 360-degree camera, wireless charging and cruise control. The Empowered Plus A 45 brings a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, ADAS and vehicle-to-load charging.
Tata now offers a lifetime high-voltage battery warranty to first private owners of the 45 kWh Nexon EV, which is a strong reason to choose that pack. Home charging on a 7.2 kW charger takes around six and a half hours for the 45 kWh battery, and DC fast charging is widely available through Tata's partner networks.
Which variant should you buy?
The Fearless 45 at ₹15.34 lakh gives you the large battery, bigger screens and a rear camera. The Empowered 45 adds a sunroof and 360-degree camera for ₹1 lakh more. Skip the MR versions unless you only drive in the city, and treat the Dark editions as paint-and-trim options.
30 kWh or 45 kWh?
Take the 45 kWh. The gap between Creative Plus MR and Creative 45 is about ₹1.85 lakh, and it buys over 200 km of extra claimed range plus the lifetime battery warranty for first owners. The 30 kWh version only makes sense as a second car for short city trips.
How does it compare with the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV?
The Mahindra is quicker and is well equipped for its price, but it has a single 39.4 kWh battery and Mahindra quotes only 285 km real-world. The Nexon EV 45 goes further and has a longer track record. For mixed city and highway use, the Nexon is the safer choice.
Is it worth paying for the top trim?
The Empowered Plus A 45 adds ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, ADAS and V2L for about ₹1.35 lakh over the Empowered 45. If you live somewhere hot and drive long distances, the ventilated seats and ADAS are useful. Otherwise, the Empowered 45 covers the essentials.
