Mahindra Scorpio N
Mahindra's body-on-frame SUV pairs a tough ladder chassis with strong petrol and diesel engines and genuine four-wheel drive. The August 2026 update brings a bigger screen, a panoramic sunroof and a 540-degree camera to the upper trims. It suits buyers who want a rugged seven-seater for bad roads and long trips, and who are willing to pay for at least the Z8S.

Our verdict on the Scorpio N
Z8 is where the Scorpio N stops feeling like a work vehicle. Below the Z8S you get two airbags, steel wheels and a basic cabin. The Z2 and Z4 diesels also use a detuned 130 bhp engine. That suits some buyers, but it is not the car in the advertising. The August 2026 update has made the upper trims much better, with a 12.3-inch screen, a digital cluster and, on the Z8L, a panoramic sunroof, a 540-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS. The engines are strong, the ride on a ladder frame is tough, and four-wheel drive is real rather than a badge. The third row is tight and fuel economy is modest. With 31 variants spread across nearly ₹12 lakh, the badge on the tailgate tells you very little, so check the exact spec before you sign.
Good things
- mStallion turbo petrol makes about 203 PS and up to 380 Nm
- mHawk diesel makes about 175 PS and up to 400 Nm with the automatic
- 4XPLOR four-wheel drive with terrain modes and a locking differential is genuinely available
- Updated upper trims get a 12.3-inch screen, 540-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS
Could be better
- Z2, Z4 and Z6 get two airbags and steel wheels; six airbags and alloys start at Z8S
- Z2 and Z4 diesels use a detuned 130 bhp, 300 Nm engine
- Third row is cramped and boot space with all seats up is small
- A ₹11.8 lakh spread between base and top means the badge tells you very little

Mahindra Scorpio N: a proper off-roader if you pick the right trim
The Scorpio N is a body-on-frame SUV that is 4,662 mm long and 1,917 mm wide on a 2,750 mm wheelbase. It is sold as a seven-seater, with a six-seater option on the top Z8L. Prices run from ₹13.69 lakh to ₹25.49 lakh ex-showroom across 31 variants. Mahindra updated it in August 2026 with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a panoramic sunroof and a 540-degree camera, while the engines stayed the same.
The 2.0 turbo petrol makes about 203 PS, with 370 Nm with the manual and 380 Nm with the automatic. The 2.2 diesel makes about 175 PS and up to 400 Nm with the automatic. The Z2 and Z4 diesels use a lower 130 bhp, 300 Nm tune. Gearboxes are a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic. Four-wheel drive is offered on the Z4, Z8T and Z8L diesels.
Equipment rises sharply through the range. Z2 to Z6 have two airbags and steel wheels, with Z6 adding a sunroof and rear camera. Z8S brings six airbags, 17-inch alloys, LED projector headlamps and the new screens. Z8 adds dual-zone climate, keyless entry, a wireless charger and TPMS. Z8T adds 18-inch wheels, ventilated seats and Sony audio, and Z8L adds the panoramic sunroof, 540-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS.
Which variant should you buy?
Z8 diesel for most buyers. It costs ₹19.86 lakh as a manual and brings everything that makes daily life easier, including six airbags, alloys, dual-zone climate and keyless entry. Z8L is worth it if you want the full equipment list, including ADAS and the panoramic roof. If you need four-wheel drive on a budget, the Z4 4WD at ₹18.03 lakh is the cheapest option, but it has two airbags and a basic cabin.
Petrol or diesel?
Diesel for most people. It has more torque, suits a heavy body-on-frame SUV and will be cheaper to run over long distances. It is also the only way to get four-wheel drive. The petrol is quick and refined, but expect low real-world economy, and it costs only about ₹27,000 to ₹1 lakh less at the same trim.
Do you need four-wheel drive?
Only if you regularly drive on snow, sand, mud or steep unpaved tracks. 4WD adds roughly ₹1.9–2.2 lakh on the Z4 and Z8T diesels and is not available with the petrol. For city and highway use, the two-wheel-drive diesel has more than enough grip and is lighter and cheaper.
How does it compare with the Tata Safari?
The Safari is a monocoque SUV with a more car-like ride, a more premium cabin and more features at each price point, and it now offers both petrol and diesel engines. It has no four-wheel drive, though. The Scorpio N is tougher, sits on a ladder frame and offers proper four-wheel drive with terrain modes. If you mostly drive on good roads, the Safari is the more comfortable family car. If you leave the tarmac often, the Scorpio N is built for it.
