Mahindra Bolero Neo
A tough, body-on-frame seven-seater under four metres, with a 100 PS diesel, rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. It suits buyers who drive on poor roads, carry loads or need occasional extra seats, and who value durability over refinement. Families wanting modern safety kit will find more in a similarly priced monocoque SUV.

Our verdict on the Bolero Neo
The Bolero Neo is built for a different job from most cars at its price. Its ladder frame, rear-wheel drive and torquey diesel make it durable on bad roads and happy carrying weight, and it fits seven seats into under four metres. The cost is comfort and safety. There are only two airbags, the ride is firmer than a monocoque SUV’s, and the third row is jump seats suited to children or short trips. For rural use, heavy loads or rough roads, it makes sense. For city families, a Maruti Ertiga, Kia Carens or a five-seat compact SUV will be safer and more comfortable for similar money.
Good things
- Ladder-frame body and rear-wheel drive cope well with bad roads and loads
- 260 Nm diesel pulls well at low speed
- Seven seats in a 3,995 mm body
- Locking differential option for rough terrain
Could be better
- Only two airbags across the range, with no stability control listed
- Third-row seats are side-facing jump seats, suitable for children or short trips
- Diesel manual only, with no automatic
- Ride and refinement lag behind monocoque rivals at the same price

Mahindra Bolero Neo: a rugged seven-seater for rough roads
The Bolero Neo is the more modern of Mahindra’s two Boleros. It is 3,995 mm long and 1,817 mm tall, uses a body-on-frame chassis and drives the rear wheels. The 1.5-litre mHawk100 diesel makes 100 PS and 260 Nm, and comes only with a five-speed manual. It is built for durability on poor roads rather than for comfort.
Mahindra refreshed it in October 2025 with a new grille, new colours, reworked suspension it calls RideFlo, and a new top N11 trim with a rear camera. Prices now run from ₹9.06 lakh to ₹10.85 lakh ex-showroom across five trims: N4, N8, N10 (R), N11 and N10 (O). The engine and gearbox were not changed in the update, and claimed economy is 17.29 km/l.
The N10 (O) adds what Mahindra calls Multi-Terrain Technology, a manual locking differential that helps on loose surfaces. Every version has two airbags, ABS with EBD and seven seats, with the last two as side-facing jump seats in the boot. There is no stability control in the published specification, which is now unusual at this price.
Which variant should you buy?
N10 (R). It adds the touchscreen, cruise control, ISOFIX mounts, fog lamps, a rear wiper and armrests over the N8, for about ₹30,000 more. N11 adds a rear camera and alloys for ₹40,000 more, useful in a car this tall. N10 (O) is for those who need the locking differential.
Is it safe enough for a family?
It has two airbags and ABS, and no stability control is listed. Similarly priced SUVs such as the Hyundai Exter or Tata Punch offer six airbags or stronger crash ratings. If most of your driving is with family on highways, we would look at those first.
How does it compare with the Maruti Ertiga?
The Ertiga is a proper three-row MPV with forward-facing seats, an automatic option, factory CNG and a smoother ride. The Bolero Neo is tougher and better on broken roads. Pick the Ertiga for family use, the Bolero Neo for rough conditions and heavy duty.
Bolero Neo or the classic Bolero?
The Neo has a more modern cabin, a touchscreen, cruise control and better driving manners. The classic Bolero is simpler and cheaper to keep. For most private buyers the Neo is the better choice.
