Our verdict on the XUV 3XO

The XUV 3XO is a strong car hidden behind a hard-to-read price list. Twenty-seven variants run across two naming schemes, and it is not obvious that the petrol Mahindra does not call Turbo is turbocharged too. Once you see that, the choice gets easier: the 111 PS engine is enough for most owners, and the REVX EDGE (O) just under ₹10 lakh carries the equipment people use every day. The TGDi is quicker and makes sense if you want ADAS as well, via the AX5 L. The diesel is still worth a look for high mileage. Watch the automatic premium, which varies from ₹90,000 to ₹1.88 lakh depending on trim.

Mahindra XUV 3XO: two turbo petrols and a price list to decode

The XUV 3XO is the heavily updated successor to the XUV300. It is 3,990 mm long with a 2,600 mm wheelbase, one of the longest in the class, and a 364-litre boot. Mahindra offers it with three engines, two petrol and one diesel, across a wide price spread, and six airbags and ESC are standard from the entry MX1 upwards.

The base petrol is a 1.2 turbo making 111 PS and 200 Nm, offered with a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic. The stronger 1.2 TGDi makes 130 PS and 230 Nm and claims 20.1 km/l with the manual. The 1.5 diesel makes 300 Nm and comes with a manual or a six-speed AMT, which claims 21.2 km/l, the best figure in the range.

There are two ladders of trims. The MX and AX names are the familiar ones; the REVX trims (M, M (O), EDGE, EDGE (O) and A) undercut the AX trims on price with similar everyday equipment. Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹7.79 lakh to ₹15.04 lakh, across 27 versions, so it pays to compare like for like before you sign.

Which variant should you buy?

The REVX EDGE (O) petrol manual at ₹9.89 lakh. It brings the panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch touchscreen, reverse camera, cruise control and keyless start. If you want ADAS and a 360-degree camera, the AX5 L with the TGDi engine at ₹12.03 lakh is the cheapest way to get both.

Turbo or TGDi petrol?

Both are turbocharged 1.2s. The 111 PS turbo is adequate for town and highway use. The 130 PS TGDi is noticeably quicker and, on paper, more economical with the manual (20.1 km/l against 18.89 km/l), but it is only sold from REVX A at ₹11.28 lakh upwards.

Manual or automatic?

Petrol automatics are six-speed torque converters, which suit city driving. The premium is uneven: ₹90,000 on the REVX M (O), ₹1.2 lakh on the REVX EDGE and ₹1.88 lakh between the AX5 petrol manual and automatic. Buying the automatic lower down the range saves the most. The diesel automatic is an AMT.

How does it compare with the Tata Nexon?

Both offer petrol and diesel. The Nexon adds a turbo CNG and a larger boot, while the 3XO has the stronger petrol engines, a longer wheelbase and a panoramic sunroof lower in the range. Drive both, and compare the exact trims rather than the starting prices.
