Our verdict on the C3 Aircross

The Aircross X makes the most sense as a seven-seater. Few cars at this price offer a third row, and Citroen’s removable seats mean you can carry the occasional extra passengers and still get a usable boot the rest of the time. The 110 PS turbo is the engine to have; the 82 PS 1.2 is underpowered for a car this size, especially loaded. The cabin has improved and six airbags are now standard, but the automatic is limited to the most expensive trim, and Citroen’s small dealer network and weak resale values are real costs. If you do not need the third row, a Seltos, Creta or Kushaq gives you a more rounded five-seater for similar money.

Good things

  • Removable third row adds flexibility few rivals offer at this price
  • Long 2,671 mm wheelbase gives generous rear legroom
  • Turbo petrol is strong low down, with 190 to 205 Nm from 1,750 rpm
  • 200 mm of ground clearance and a soft, comfortable ride

Could be better

  • The 82 PS 1.2 petrol struggles in a car this size
  • Automatic is offered only on the Max Turbo, from ₹14.14 lakh
  • Third row is tight for adults on longer trips
  • Small dealer and service network, and resale lags Hyundai and Maruti

Citroen C3 Aircross: a compact-SUV price for an occasional seven-seater

The Aircross X is the updated and renamed C3 Aircross. At 4,323 mm long it is bigger than the sub-four-metre SUVs it is priced against, and its 2,671 mm wheelbase is longer than that of many mid-size rivals. The headline feature is the seven-seat option, in which the two third-row seats can be lifted out when you need the boot. Ground clearance is a generous 200 mm.

There are two 1.2-litre petrol engines. The naturally aspirated one makes 82 PS and comes only with a five-speed manual. The turbo makes 110 PS with 190 Nm on the six-speed manual, or 205 Nm with the six-speed torque-converter automatic. Citroen claims 17.5 km/l for the non-turbo, 18.5 km/l for the turbo manual and 17.6 km/l for the automatic.

The trims are You, Plus and Max. Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹8.89 lakh to about ₹14.72 lakh for the dual-tone automatic seven-seater. Six airbags and ESP are standard, the Plus adds the 10.2-inch touchscreen and climate control, and the Max adds ventilated seats, leatherette and 17-inch alloys. Limited-run Comfort Editions add beige upholstery.

Which variant should you buy?

The Plus Turbo 7-seater at ₹11.99 lakh. It brings the engine the car needs, the touchscreen, climate control and the third row. The Max Turbo adds ventilated seats and nicer trim, which are welcome but not essential. We would avoid the 1.2 non-turbo versions unless the car will be used lightly in town.

Five seats or seven?

The seven-seat Max Turbo costs about ₹37,600 more than the five-seat one. For that you get two removable seats and roof-mounted vents for the rear rows. The third row is best for children or short trips. If you will never use it, the five-seater keeps the full boot without needing to remove anything.

Manual or automatic?

The automatic is a conventional six-speed torque converter and comes only with the Max Turbo, at ₹14.14 lakh for five seats. That is a large jump from the Plus Turbo manual. If you want an automatic for less, rivals such as the Kushaq, Taigun and Creta offer one lower down their ranges.

How does it compare with the Maruti Ertiga?

The Ertiga is a full-time seven-seater with a bigger third row, a cheaper automatic and a far larger service network. The Aircross X looks and drives more like an SUV, has more ground clearance and a stronger turbo engine. Choose the Ertiga if seven people travel often; choose the Citroen if the third row is occasional.
