Citroen Basalt

Citroen's coupe-roofed SUV, now sold as the Basalt X, offers a lot of car for compact-SUV money: 4.35 metres long, a 2,651 mm wheelbase and a 470-litre boot. It suits buyers who want space and a comfortable ride at a lower price than a Creta or Seltos, as long as they pick a turbo variant.

Our verdict on the Basalt

The Basalt is the value play among larger compact SUVs. You get a long body, a roomy rear seat and a big boot, and Citroen now gives six airbags and ESP to every variant. Pick carefully. The cheapest versions use the 82 PS non-turbo engine, which feels stretched in a car this size, so we would treat ₹11.57 lakh for the Plus Turbo as the real starting price. The interior is plainer than a Creta or Seltos, the dealer network is thin outside big cities, and resale values for Citroen are still unproven. If those don't put you off, a turbo Basalt is roomier for the money than most of its rivals. The festive discounts on offer this month make a good deal better.

Good things

  • Big body for the price: 4,352 mm long, 2,651 mm wheelbase and a 470-litre boot
  • Six airbags, ESP and hill hold on every variant, including the base You
  • The 1.2 turbo makes 110 PS and up to 205 Nm, with a proper torque-converter automatic
  • Max trim brings ventilated seats and a 360-degree camera at around ₹11–14 lakh

Could be better

  • The 82 PS non-turbo engine is underpowered for a car this size and comes only with a manual
  • Cabin quality and design feel more budget than a Creta, Seltos or Kushaq
  • Small Citroen dealer and service network, and unproven resale value
  • Fourteen variants, several of which differ only by seat colour or roof paint

Citroen Basalt: a big SUV body at a compact SUV price

The Basalt is a coupe-styled SUV built on the same base as the C3 Aircross. Citroen refreshed it as the Basalt X in September 2026 and kept the core offer: a 4.35-metre body, a 2,651 mm wheelbase, 180 mm of ground clearance and a 470-litre boot, at prices from ₹8.55 lakh to ₹14.11 lakh ex-showroom. That puts it against cars such as the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta on size while charging closer to Nexon and Brezza money.

Two engines are offered, both 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrols. The non-turbo version makes 82 PS and 115 Nm and comes only with a five-speed manual. The turbo makes 110 PS, with 190 Nm when paired with the six-speed manual and 205 Nm with the six-speed torque-converter automatic. Claimed economy is 18.0 km/l for the non-turbo, 19.5 km/l for the turbo manual and 18.7 km/l for the automatic.

Equipment is split into You, Plus and Max trims. Every Basalt now has six airbags, ESP, hill hold, ISOFIX mounts and rear parking sensors. Plus adds the 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless phone mirroring, automatic climate control, keyless entry and LED projector headlamps. Max adds diamond-cut alloys, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, a wireless charger and an auto-dimming mirror.

Which variant should you buy?

The Plus Turbo manual at ₹11.57 lakh. It has the engine the car needs and the features you will use daily: the big touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and CarPlay, auto AC and keyless entry. Go up to the Max Turbo only if ventilated seats and the 360-degree camera matter to you. The Comfort Editions are worth having if you prefer beige seats, since they cost the same as or close to the trim they are based on.

Turbo or non-turbo?

Turbo, unless your budget stops at ₹10 lakh. The 82 PS non-turbo engine was designed for the smaller C3 hatchback and has to work hard in a 4.35-metre SUV, especially with passengers and luggage. The turbo adds 28 PS and more than 75 Nm, and its manual version even claims better economy. The cheapest way in is the You Turbo at ₹9.99 lakh, but that variant misses the touchscreen and auto AC.

Manual or automatic?

The automatic is a six-speed torque converter, which is smoother in traffic than the AMTs found in cheaper cars. It costs ₹1.25 lakh more than the manual at both Plus Turbo and Max Turbo, and it adds cruise control and slightly more torque. If you drive mostly in the city, we think it is worth the premium. The non-turbo engine has no automatic option.

How does it compare with the Tata Curvv?

Both are coupe-roofed SUVs in the same price band. The Curvv has a richer cabin, a diesel option and more features at the top end. The Basalt is cheaper like for like, gives six airbags and ESP from the base variant, and has a softer ride. If you want the most equipment and a stronger brand network, look at the Curvv. If you want space and comfort for less, the Basalt is the better buy.
