Kia Sonet
Kia’s sub-four-metre SUV, sold with three engines when most rivals offer one or two: a 1.2 petrol, a 120 PS 1.0 turbo petrol with a dual-clutch automatic, and a 1.5 diesel with a proper torque-converter automatic. It suits buyers who want a well-equipped compact SUV and particularly those who still drive enough to justify diesel.

Our verdict on the Sonet
The Sonet’s strength is choice. The 1.0 turbo petrol makes 120 PS and 172 Nm and comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch, and the 1.5 diesel with 250 Nm and a six-speed automatic is something most of the segment has dropped. Equipment arrives early: every version has six airbags, the HTE (O) adds a sunroof, and the HTK (O) brings the touchscreen and camera. The HTK+ petrol at ₹9.28 lakh is the value pick. The weak points are the 1.2 petrol, which makes just 83 PS and has to work hard with a full car, and the top of the range. The GTX+ and X-Line at ₹13.75 to ₹14.36 lakh are entry-level Seltos and Creta money for a smaller car. Buy the Sonet in the middle of its range, not at the top.
Good things
- 1.0 turbo makes 172 Nm and pairs with a seven-speed DCT, not an AMT
- 1.5 diesel with 250 Nm and a torque-converter automatic is still on sale, now from ₹9.99 lakh
- Six airbags across the range, and a sunroof from the second-cheapest trim
- HTX turbo DCT brings ventilated seats, cruise control and rear disc brakes for ₹11.84 lakh
Could be better
- The 1.2 petrol makes 83 PS and 115 Nm and feels strained with a full car
- GTX+ and X-Line at ₹13.75–14.36 lakh overlap with larger SUVs
- Eight trims with (O) suffixes and 23 versions make honest comparison harder than it needs to be
- Rear seat is tighter than in rivals with longer wheelbases such as the Kylaq

Kia Sonet: the compact SUV that still offers a diesel
The Sonet is Kia’s smallest SUV in India, under four metres long and sharing much of its hardware with the Hyundai Venue. Kia sells it in eight trims, from HTE to X-Line, with prices from ₹7.45 lakh to ₹14.36 lakh ex-showroom. The range runs to 23 versions once every engine and gearbox pairing is counted, so it pays to shortlist by engine first.
Three engines are on offer. The 1.2 petrol (83 PS, 115 Nm) comes only with a five-speed manual and stops at HTK+ (O). The 1.0 turbo petrol (120 PS, 172 Nm) comes with a six-speed clutchless iMT or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The 1.5 diesel (116 PS, 250 Nm) has a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic.
Safety and equipment are generous low down. Six airbags are standard, a sunroof arrives on the HTE (O), and the HTK (O) adds an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear camera and automatic climate control. The GTX+ adds Level 1 ADAS, a 360-degree camera and Bose audio.
Which variant should you buy?
The HTK+ 1.2 petrol manual at ₹9.28 lakh. It has the touchscreen, camera, sunroof, auto AC, push-button start and wireless charger. HTK+ (O) adds LED headlamps and leatherette seats for about ₹48,000 more, which is reasonable if you want them. Above HTX, the price climbs faster than the useful equipment.
Petrol, turbo petrol or diesel?
Choose the 1.2 petrol if you drive mostly in town and want the lowest price. Choose the turbo if you want an automatic or drive on highways often; the DCT starts at about ₹10 lakh. Choose the diesel if you cover long distances, since it claims 22.3 km/l in manual form and has the most pulling power. The diesel automatic costs about the same as the turbo DCT at most trims.
Manual or automatic?
There is no automatic on the 1.2 petrol. The turbo DCT is quick and efficient but, like all dual-clutch boxes, is less suited to long crawls in heavy traffic. The diesel’s torque-converter automatic is smoother at low speed and is the one we would pick for daily city use.
Is the top-end GTX+ worth it?
Only if you specifically want ADAS, a 360-degree camera and Bose audio in a small car. At ₹13.75 lakh for the turbo and ₹14.36 lakh for the diesel, you are in the price range of larger SUVs with more cabin and boot space. Test-drive one before committing.
