Our verdict on the Syros
The Syros is the most practical of Kia’s small SUVs. Its upright body gives a roomier rear seat and a bigger boot than the Sonet, and every petrol version uses the same 120 PS turbo, so even the cheaper trims do not feel short of power. The diesel with a proper automatic is a rarity in this class. The catch is price: the HTX and HTX (O) at ₹14 to ₹15.8 lakh are in mid-size SUV territory, where a Seltos or Creta gives you more car. We would buy an HTK EX or HTK+ and stop there.
Good things
- Every petrol variant gets the 120 PS turbo, not a weaker base engine
- Upright body frees up rear headroom and a 465-litre boot
- Diesel automatic is a torque converter, not an AMT
- Six airbags and a 10.25-inch touchscreen from the base HTE
Could be better
- Top HTX trims at ₹14 to ₹15.8 lakh overlap with the Seltos and Creta
- No automatic below HTK+, at ₹11.96 lakh
- HTX and HTX (O) come only as automatics
- The boxy styling will not suit every taste

Kia Syros: space first, in a sub-four-metre body
The Syros sits between the Sonet and the Seltos in Kia’s range. It is under four metres long like the Sonet, but its tall, flat-sided shape and 2,550 mm wheelbase give it more rear-seat room and a boot that Kia rates at up to 465 litres, depending on where the sliding rear seat is set. Six airbags and a 10.25-inch touchscreen are standard from the base HTE.
There are two engines. The 1.0 turbo petrol makes 120 PS and 172 Nm and comes with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT. The 1.5 diesel makes 250 Nm and pairs with a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic. Claimed economy is 18.2 km/l for the petrol manual, 17.68 km/l for the DCT and 20.75 km/l for the diesel manual.
The trims are HTE, HTE (O), HTK EX, HTK+, HTK+ (O), HTX and HTX (O). Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹8.42 lakh to ₹15.82 lakh. The base HTE is petrol only, automatics start at HTK+, and the two HTX trims are automatic only, which pushes the best-equipped versions close to mid-size SUV money.
Which variant should you buy?
The HTK EX with the turbo petrol at ₹9.82 lakh covers what most owners need: sunroof, alloys, LED lights and a reverse camera. If you want the panoramic roof, cruise control and the option of an automatic, move to HTK+. We would skip the HTX trims unless ventilated seats and the larger screen matter to you.
Petrol or diesel?
The diesel costs about ₹80,000 more at the same trim. It claims 20.75 km/l with the manual against 18.2 km/l for the turbo petrol. Unless you drive well over 1,500 km a month, the petrol is the cheaper car to own.
Manual or automatic?
The turbo petrol uses a seven-speed DCT and the diesel a six-speed torque converter, both from HTK+. The automatic costs ₹1.2 lakh more on either fuel at that trim. The diesel automatic is the smoother choice for heavy traffic.
How does it compare with the Kia Sonet?
The two share engines and are similar in length. The Sonet is cheaper and offers a 1.2 non-turbo petrol at the bottom of the range. The Syros has more rear space, a larger boot and a more modern cabin. If the back seat is used often, the Syros is worth the extra.
