Our verdict on the Carens Clavis

The Carens Clavis is a well-packaged family car with a usable third row, standard six airbags and a real choice of engines. The diesel is the one for high mileage and full loads; the turbo petrol with the DCT is quicker and nicer in town. The problem is the price spread. With around 25 versions between ₹11.39 lakh and ₹21.79 lakh, the top trims cost as much as a well-equipped mid-size SUV, and ADAS is held back for the most expensive DCTs. We would stay in the middle, at HTK+ (O). If you mainly need seven seats and low running costs, a Maruti Ertiga CNG costs much less. If you rarely use the third row, a five-seat SUV may suit you better.

Kia Carens Clavis: a seven-seater with a real choice of engines

The Carens Clavis is Kia’s facelifted Carens: a seven-seat MPV, 4,550 mm long with a 2,780 mm wheelbase, slotted between the Maruti Ertiga and the Toyota Innova. It comes with a 115 PS 1.5 petrol, a 160 PS 1.5 turbo petrol and a 116 PS 1.5 diesel. CNG is also offered on the entry trims. The cabin is laid out for families first.

Gearboxes are a six-speed manual, a six-speed iMT clutchless manual, a seven-speed DCT for the turbo, and a six-speed torque-converter automatic for the diesel. Claimed economy runs from 15.34 km/l for the base petrol to 19.54 km/l for the diesel manual. The turbo with the DCT is the quickest; the diesel manual is the most economical.

Prices run from ₹11.39 lakh to ₹21.79 lakh ex-showroom. Every version has six airbags and stability control. The sunroof arrives at HTE (EX), the twin 12.25-inch screens and 360-degree camera at HTX, and Level 2 ADAS only on the top DCT trims. A six-seat layout with captain’s chairs is offered on some upper trims. With all three rows up the boot is small, at 216 litres.

Which variant should you buy?

HTK+ (O). It has cruise control, push-button start, front parking sensors, a wireless charger, a dual dashcam and a sunroof, panoramic on the turbo. HTX adds the big screens and a 360-degree camera for about ₹1.8 lakh more, which is pleasant but not essential. HTE (EX) is the sensible budget choice.

Petrol, turbo petrol or diesel?

The diesel suits heavy use and full loads: 250 Nm and 19.54 km/l claimed. The turbo petrol is the quickest and smoothest, best with the DCT for city driving. The 1.5 NA petrol is the cheapest way in but feels modest with seven people aboard, and comes only with a manual.

How does it compare with the Maruti Ertiga?

The Ertiga is lakhs cheaper, offers factory CNG and is very economical. The Clavis has stronger engines, a diesel, more equipment and six airbags across the range. If budget and running cost matter most, the Ertiga is enough. If you want features and power, the Clavis justifies its premium in the mid trims.

Is the top-end Clavis worth it?

Not really. Above ₹19 lakh you are paying for styling packs, Bose audio and ADAS. At ₹20-22 lakh you can buy a well-equipped mid-size SUV or a bigger MPV, so only go this high if you specifically need seven seats and want every feature.
