Our verdict on the Carens

The Carens is now a simple proposition: one trim, three fuels, manual only. The Premium (O) is well judged for the money, with six airbags, ESC, wireless phone mirroring, a rear camera and roof vents for the back rows, and the 2,780 mm wheelbase gives the second and third rows proper space. The petrol is adequate rather than strong at 144 Nm, which matters on a loaded climb, so heavy users should go diesel. The CNG makes sense on cost but takes the boot down to 116 litres. If you need an automatic, or more features, this is not your car; price the Carens Clavis instead. Against the Maruti Ertiga, the Carens costs more but feels more modern inside.

Good things

  • Six airbags, ESC and a rear camera come with every version
  • Long wheelbase makes the third row usable for adults on short trips
  • Diesel’s 250 Nm suits a fully loaded car
  • Factory-fitted CNG is now an option

Could be better

  • No automatic at all; that now means the costlier Carens Clavis
  • Petrol makes 144 Nm and will feel stretched with seven aboard
  • CNG version leaves only 116 litres of boot
  • Starts about ₹2 lakh above the Maruti Ertiga

Kia Carens: one trim, three fuels, manual only

Kia has reshaped its MPV range. The full line-up of trims, the turbo petrol and the automatics now sit under the Carens Clavis name, and the plain Carens has become a value-focused car with one trim, Premium (O). It is a seven-seater, it is manual only, and you choose between a 1.5 petrol, a 1.5 diesel or, since September 2026, a factory-fitted CNG.

Equipment is better than the price suggests. Every version gets six airbags, ESC, hill assist, all-round disc brakes, an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.5-inch driver display, a rear camera, and AC vents for the second and third rows. The second row slides, reclines and tumbles with one touch, which makes getting to the back easier.

The engines differ more than the equipment. The petrol makes about 115 PS and 144 Nm, the diesel 116 PS and 250 Nm, and the CNG about 96 PS and 123 Nm, all through a six-speed manual. Ex-showroom prices are ₹11.12 lakh for petrol, ₹12.12 lakh for CNG and ₹12.98 lakh for diesel, so the choice of fuel is really the only decision you make in the showroom.

Petrol, diesel or CNG?

Petrol for most families doing city runs and the odd trip. Diesel if you drive long distances or often carry a full load; its 250 Nm makes the car far more relaxed. CNG costs ₹1 lakh more than petrol and is cheapest to run, but you lose power and most of the boot, and Kia has not yet published a certified efficiency figure.

What if you want an automatic?

The Carens no longer offers one. You will need the Carens Clavis, which shares the body and adds iMT, DCT and diesel automatic options along with higher trims. Expect to pay noticeably more for the same seven seats.

How does it compare with the Maruti Ertiga?

The Ertiga starts about ₹2 lakh lower, offers a petrol automatic and has a wider service network. The Carens is larger, has a longer wheelbase, offers a diesel and feels more modern inside. If budget is tight, the Ertiga. If space and a diesel matter, the Carens.

Is the boot big enough?

With all seven seats in use you get 216 litres, enough for a few soft bags. The CNG version drops to 116 litres because the gas tank sits under the boot floor. Fold the third row and space grows a lot, so most families will travel as five-plus-luggage on long trips.
