Our verdict on the Ertiga

The Ertiga still does what almost nothing else does: seven usable seats for under ₹9 lakh, from a brand you can get serviced anywhere. One engine across the range keeps the choice simple, and the CNG makes the running cost low enough that the premium is recovered quickly. The trade-offs are a small boot with all rows up, a 103 PS engine that is adequate rather than relaxed when full, and CNG that is only offered on VXi and ZXi manuals. VXi CNG is the one we would buy. If you need an automatic, the ZXi AT is the sensible stop; the ZXi+ adds mostly convenience.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: the CNG pays for itself in about 58,000 km

The Ertiga uses one engine across the range: a 1,462 cc K15C petrol with about 103 PS and 137 Nm. You pair it with a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic, or choose the factory-fitted S-CNG on the VXi and ZXi manuals. Maruti claims 20.51 km/l for the petrol manual, 20.3 km/l for the automatic and 26.11 km/kg on CNG.

There are four trims: LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+. Six airbags, ESP, hill hold and rear parking sensors are standard. VXi adds rear AC vents and audio, ZXi adds the touchscreen, climate control and alloys, and ZXi+ adds cruise control, a reversing camera and wireless phone mirroring. As of October 2026 the range runs from ₹8.90 lakh to ₹13.14 lakh ex-showroom.

The car is 4,395 mm long with a 2,740 mm wheelbase, so the third row works for children and shorter adults on most trips. With all seats up the boot is just 209 litres, enough for a couple of soft bags. Folding the third row turns it into a large luggage space, which is how most families will travel on long trips with five or six people aboard.

Which variant should you buy?

VXi CNG at ₹10.94 lakh. It has the rear AC vents that matter in a seven-seater, and CNG makes it very cheap to run. If you want a touchscreen and climate control, ZXi CNG at ₹12 lakh. Skip LXi unless the budget is fixed; it has no audio system and no rear AC vents.

Petrol or CNG?

The CNG premium is about ₹99,000 at the same trim. At ₹95 a litre for petrol and ₹76 a kg for CNG, the claimed figures put the break-even at roughly 58,000 km. For a car most people buy to cover distance, that is quick. The costs are a smaller boot and no automatic option.

Manual or automatic?

The automatic is a proper six-speed torque converter and costs ₹1.35–1.45 lakh more than the manual at the same trim. It is smooth in traffic and Maruti claims nearly the same efficiency. The catch is that it is petrol only, so you give up CNG savings for the comfort.

How does it compare with the Kia Carens?

The Carens is larger, offers a diesel and has a more modern cabin, but it starts about ₹2.2 lakh higher and is now manual only. The Ertiga is the cheaper, simpler choice with an automatic option and a wider service network.
