Our verdict on the Celerio
The Celerio does one thing very well: it is cheap to buy and very cheap to run. Claimed figures of up to 26 km/l on petrol and 34.43 km/kg on CNG are among the best of any car on sale, and Maruti’s network means servicing is easy almost anywhere. Six airbags are now standard, which was a weak point before. The rest is basic. The 1.0 three-cylinder is fine in town but slow with a full car, the AGS automatic is jerky compared with a torque converter, and the touchscreen and alloys arrive only on the ZXi+. The VXi AGS at ₹5.63 lakh is a sensible budget automatic. If you can spend ₹6.3 lakh or more, test a Tata Tiago Pure+ too, which adds ESC and a rear camera.
Good things
- Very high claimed efficiency: up to 26.00 km/l petrol and 34.43 km/kg CNG
- Six airbags as standard
- VXi AGS automatic from ₹5.63 lakh
- Wide service network and low maintenance costs
Could be better
- Touchscreen, alloys and push-button start only on the top ZXi+
- CNG offered only with the VXi trim and a manual gearbox
- Three-cylinder 1.0 feels slow with four adults on board
- AGS automatic is less smooth than a torque-converter or CVT

Maruti Suzuki Celerio: the low-running-cost city car
The Celerio is Maruti Suzuki’s compact hatchback from its Arena range, aimed at buyers stepping up from a two-wheeler or wanting a second car for town. It is sold in LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ trims, with prices from ₹4.70 lakh to ₹6.75 lakh ex-showroom. It sits between the Alto K10 and Wagon R in Maruti’s Arena range.
Every Celerio uses a 1.0 three-cylinder petrol with a five-speed manual or AGS automated manual. Maruti claims 26.00 km/l for the AGS and 24.97 km/l for the manual. The factory CNG version, offered only as a VXi manual, claims 34.43 km/kg. Maruti’s Arena network means servicing is available almost everywhere.
Six airbags, ABS and hill-hold assist are standard. Equipment grows slowly through the range: VXi adds power windows and a split rear seat, ZXi adds keyless entry and a rear wiper, and only the ZXi+ gets the 7-inch touchscreen, push-button start, fog lamps and alloys. The boot holds 313 litres, which is generous for a car this size.
Which variant should you buy?
The VXi. As a manual at ₹5.18 lakh or an AGS at ₹5.63 lakh it has the safety kit, power windows and split rear seat. Add a basic aftermarket screen if needed. Go to ZXi+ only if you want the factory touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Petrol or CNG?
The VXi CNG costs ₹79,500 more than the petrol VXi and claims 34.43 km/kg. If you drive more than about 1,000 km a month and have CNG stations nearby, it pays back. The catch is that CNG is offered only on the VXi with a manual gearbox.
Manual or AGS automatic?
The AGS costs ₹45,000 more and claims better mileage than the manual. It removes clutch work in traffic but shifts slowly, so lift off the throttle slightly during gear changes. For mostly city use, it is a reasonable choice.
How does it compare with the Tata Tiago?
The Celerio is more efficient and cheaper to maintain. The Tiago’s larger 1.2 engine makes 86 PS, and its Pure+ trim adds ESC, a rear camera and a wireless smartphone screen at about ₹6.10 lakh. For lowest running cost, the Celerio; for more equipment per rupee, the Tiago.
