Our verdict on the C3

The C3 has always been a roomy, comfortable hatchback with a soft ride, and the turbo petrol makes it quick by class standards. The C3 X update has made the range more sensible: the Shine now carries six airbags, ESP and a 360-degree camera from ₹7.86 lakh, and that is the version we would buy. The problem is lower down. The Live, Live (O) and Feel have only two airbags and no stability control, and that is hard to accept when many rivals now fit six airbags as standard. Skip those. The turbo automatic at ₹9.68 lakh is a fair price for a torque-converter auto. Before buying, check the nearest Citroen workshop, since the network is small, and expect weaker resale than a Maruti or Hyundai.

Citroen C3: space and a turbo for small-car money

The C3, now badged C3 X, is Citroen’s entry hatchback in India. It is just under four metres long with a 2,540 mm wheelbase, a tall roof and a 315-litre boot. Prices run from ₹4.99 lakh for the Live to ₹10.21 lakh for the Shine Turbo Sport Edition automatic, ex-showroom. It sits below the C3 Aircross and Basalt in Citroen’s line-up.

Three powertrains are offered. The 1.2 petrol (82 PS, 115 Nm) comes with a five-speed manual, and also with a factory CNG kit. The 1.2 turbo petrol (110 PS) has 190 Nm with the six-speed manual and 205 Nm with the six-speed automatic. Claimed figures are 19.3 km/l for the manuals, 18.3 km/l for the automatic and 28.1 km/kg on CNG.

Safety depends heavily on the trim. Live, Live (O) and Feel have two airbags. Feel (O) moves to six airbags, and the turbo Feel and all Shine versions add ESP, hill hold and a tyre-pressure monitor. The Shine also gets LED projector headlamps, alloys, auto AC and a 360-degree camera. Every version has ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors.

Which variant should you buy?

The Shine 1.2 petrol manual at ₹7.86 lakh. It is the first version that combines six airbags with ESP, and it adds the 360-degree camera, alloys and auto AC. If your budget stops lower, the Feel (O) at ₹7.03 lakh has six airbags and the touchscreen but no ESP.

Petrol, turbo or CNG?

The 1.2 petrol is adequate in town. The turbo is far stronger on highways and is the only way to get an automatic. CNG suits high daily mileage in cities with good CNG supply; the Shine CNG at ₹8.16 lakh keeps the full safety kit.

Manual or automatic?

Only the Shine Turbo offers an automatic, from ₹9.68 lakh. It is a six-speed torque converter, smoother in traffic than the AMTs most small-car rivals use. The cost is ₹71,000 over the turbo manual.

How does it compare with the Tata Tiago?

The C3 is bigger inside, rides better and offers a turbo automatic, which the Tiago does not. The Tiago is cheaper, has a wider service network and stronger resale. If you want space and a stronger engine, the C3 Shine; if you want low running and ownership costs, the Tiago.
