Our verdict on the Tiago

The 2026 Tiago is a sensible small car made better. Six airbags are standard on every version, which few cars at this price can claim, and the Pure+ brings stability control, a camera and a wireless smartphone touchscreen for ₹6.10 lakh. The CNG versions, now offered with an AMT too, make it one of the cheapest cars to run in its class. What has not changed is the engine: the three-cylinder 1.2 makes 86 PS and feels strained when the car is full or on the highway, more so on CNG. The cabin is also narrower than larger hatchbacks. Buy the Pure+ or Pure+ A. The Creative+ manual costs ₹1.26 lakh more than the Pure+ for a bigger screen, a 360-degree camera, alloys and a charger, which is nice but not necessary.

Tata Tiago: a safe, cheap-to-run first car

The Tiago is Tata’s entry hatchback and was facelifted in May 2026 with a new front end, a reworked dashboard and more equipment. It is offered in six trims, Smart, Pure, Pure+, Pure+ A, Creative and Creative+, with prices from ₹4.77 lakh to ₹8.62 lakh ex-showroom. It sits below the Altroz in Tata’s range and is also sold as the Tiago EV.

There is one engine, a 1.2 three-cylinder petrol with 86 PS and 113 Nm, available with a five-speed manual or an AMT. The factory CNG version produces less power on gas and claims 28.06 km/kg against 19.01 km/l for the petrol. CNG is offered up to the Creative trim, with manual or AMT. The AMT gets a rotary gear selector.

Safety is the Tiago’s strong point. Every version has six airbags, ABS and ISOFIX mounts. The Pure+ adds ESC, traction control, a rear camera and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Creative adds a 10.25-inch screen, a 360-degree camera, LED headlamps and alloys. Six colours are offered.

Which variant should you buy?

The Pure+ petrol manual at ₹6.10 lakh. It is the first trim with ESC, a rear camera, cruise control and a wireless smartphone screen. The Pure+ A adds automatic AC and rear vents for ₹46,000 more, which is worth it for families. Above that, you are paying mostly for a bigger screen, the 360-degree camera and styling.

Petrol or CNG?

CNG costs about ₹1 lakh more and claims 28.06 km/kg, so it pays back quickly if you drive a lot in a city with good CNG supply. The trade-offs are less power on gas and a smaller usable boot. If you drive under 1,000 km a month, the petrol is simpler.

Manual or AMT?

The AMT costs about ₹55,000 more and is offered with both petrol and CNG. It is convenient in traffic but slower and jerkier than a torque-converter or CVT. Drive one before choosing, especially if you plan to run on CNG.

Is the base Smart worth buying?

Only on a strict budget. It has six airbags and rear sensors, but no audio system, no speakers and no ESC. The Pure adds audio and power windows for ₹80,000 more, and the Pure+ is a much better buy if you can stretch to ₹6.10 lakh.
