Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
Maruti's tall-boy hatchback is one of the cheapest practical family cars in India: easy to get in and out of, roomy for its size and frugal to run. It suits first-time buyers, city commuters and taxi-style high-mileage users, especially in CNG form, but its crash protection is weaker than newer rivals.

Our verdict on the Wagon R
The Wagon R is a sensible, low-cost tool. The tall body gives easy entry and a surprising amount of head room, the 1.0 engine is frugal, and the CNG versions are among the cheapest cars to run per kilometre. Maruti's service network and resale value are hard to beat. The trade-offs are real. The structure scored one star in an earlier Global NCAP test, the cabin is basic, and the touchscreen and alloys are only on the top ZXi+. Stick with the VXi, as a manual, AGS or CNG, and you get everything that matters for under ₹6.5 lakh. If safety ratings matter most, look at a newer car rated by Bharat NCAP before you sign.
Good things
- Low purchase price, from ₹4,98,900
- Tall body with easy entry, good head room and a 341-litre boot
- Frugal engines and factory CNG on LXi and VXi
- Maruti's service network and strong resale
Could be better
- Weak earlier crash-test result (one star, Global NCAP)
- Touchscreen, alloys and rear wiper only on the top ZXi+
- Basic cabin materials and limited sound insulation
- CNG is not offered with the 1.2 engine or the AGS gearbox

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: the practical box for the daily commute
The Wagon R is a 3,655 mm tall-boy hatchback with a 2,435 mm wheelbase and a 341-litre boot. Its 1,675 mm height makes it easy to get in and out of, and older passengers appreciate that. Prices run from ₹4,98,900 to ₹7,23,900 ex-showroom across ten variants, including a new E85-capable Flex Fuel version launched in June 2026.
Two petrol engines are offered. The 1.0 three-cylinder makes 67 PS and 89 Nm and claims 24.35 km/l with the manual and 25.19 km/l with the AGS automatic. The 1.2 four-cylinder makes 90 PS and 113 Nm and claims 23.56 km/l (manual) and 24.43 km/l (AGS). Factory S-CNG is available with the 1.0 engine on LXi and VXi, with a manual gearbox only.
LXi is basic, with front power windows and no music system. VXi adds power windows all round, keyless entry, Bluetooth audio, steering controls and electric mirrors. ZXi moves to the 1.2 engine with similar kit, and ZXi+ adds the 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, alloys, fog lamps and a rear wiper.
Which variant should you buy?
VXi. It costs ₹5,54,400 as a manual and has the comforts you will use every day. The ZXi is interesting at ₹5,98,400 because it adds the stronger 1.2 engine for almost the same price as the VXi AGS. Pay for the ZXi+ only if you want the touchscreen and phone mirroring, which an aftermarket unit can also give you.
Petrol or CNG?
CNG costs ₹95,000 more than the petrol at both LXi and VXi. On gas the 1.0 engine is noticeably slower, and the cylinder takes up much of the boot. At around 1,500 km a month the lower fuel cost covers the premium in roughly three years; at 1,000 km a month it takes closer to five. For lighter use, the petrol is the simpler choice.
Manual or AGS automatic?
The AGS is Maruti's AMT. It costs ₹45,000 more than the manual on both engines, is slightly jerky between gears and actually claims better economy than the manual. For stop-start city driving it is a good buy at this price. CNG and the Flex Fuel version are manual only.
How does it compare with the Tata Tiago?
The Tiago is lower but more solidly built, has a four-star Global NCAP rating from its earlier test, and offers CNG with an AMT. The Wagon R has more head room, easier entry, better claimed economy and lower service costs. If safety and features matter most, choose the Tiago. If space and running costs matter more, the Wagon R is hard to beat.
