Our verdict on the Eeco

The Eeco is a tool, not a car you buy for pleasure, and judged that way it does its job. It is cheap to buy, the CNG is very economical, the sliding doors and tall roof make loading easy, and Maruti's service network is everywhere. It is also safer than before, with six airbags and stability control now standard. But it remains basic. Only the five-seat versions get air conditioning, the ride is firm and the cabin is noisy at speed. Its old design means occupants sit close to the front with little crumple space, and airbags do not change that. For a family that will travel long distances on highways, a used compact MPV or a new Maruti Ertiga is far more comfortable and safer in a crash. For a business or for short city runs with a full load, the Eeco CNG is hard to beat on cost.

Good things

  • Low purchase price and very low running costs with CNG
  • Six airbags and ESP as standard
  • Sliding side doors and a tall, flexible cabin
  • Maruti's large service network and cheap parts

Could be better

  • Air conditioning only on the 5 Seater AC variants; the six-seater has none
  • Firm ride and noisy cabin at highway speeds
  • Very basic equipment with no touchscreen or power windows
  • Old design with little crumple space in front of the occupants

Maruti Suzuki Eeco: space and low running costs, little else

The Eeco is Maruti's long-running van, now sold in four passenger versions: 5 Seater STD, 6 Seater STD, 5 Seater AC and 5 Seater AC CNG. All use a 1.2-litre K-series petrol with a 5-speed manual. The CNG version is rated at 26.78 km/kg, and the petrol at 19.71 km/l. Prices run from ₹5.28 lakh to ₹6.46 lakh ex-showroom.

Recent updates made six airbags, ESP and rear parking sensors standard, plus three-point seat belts for the rear passengers. That is a real improvement for a van that used to have very little safety equipment. The rest of the car is basic: manual windows, a simple dashboard, and air conditioning only on the AC variants.

Its strengths are space and cost. The body is 1,825 mm tall with sliding rear doors, so loading people and goods is easy, and running costs on CNG are among the lowest of any passenger vehicle. Think of it as a practical work and utility vehicle that can carry a family, not as a family car. Paint choice is simple too, with five shades.

Which variant should you buy?

The 5 Seater AC. The CNG version suits daily commercial or heavy family use, and the petrol suits occasional use. Choose the 6 Seater STD only if you need the extra seat and can live without AC.

Petrol or CNG?

CNG costs about ₹85,000 more than the petrol 5 Seater AC, but it is rated at 26.78 km/kg against 19.71 km/l. If the van runs every day, the saving on fuel recovers that gap quickly. The CNG tank does eat into the luggage area.

Is it safe enough for a family?

It is safer than it was, with six airbags and ESP as standard. The basic design, with the front occupants sitting over the front wheels, still offers little crush space. For regular highway trips with family, a modern MPV such as the Ertiga is the safer choice.

How does it compare with the Maruti Ertiga?

The Ertiga costs several lakh more but offers seven proper seats, an automatic option, AC for all rows and a far more comfortable ride. The Eeco is for buyers whose budget stops near ₹6.5 lakh or who need a van-like loading space.
