Our verdict on the Fronx

If you want an automatic, buy the turbo. If you are staying manual, the turbo Delta+ is the value pick. The Fronx splits cleanly in two. The 1.2 makes about 90 PS and comes with a manual or an AMT, which pauses at every upshift. The 1.0 turbo makes 100 PS and 147.6 Nm and pairs with a proper six-speed torque-converter automatic. In city traffic those two automatics are not comparable, and the extra money buys a genuinely different car to drive. The 1.2 CNG is the frugal choice for heavy users. Rear headroom is tight under the sloping roof, so try the back seat before you sign.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx: two engines, two different cars

The Fronx is built on the Baleno but sits higher, with 190 mm of ground clearance and a sloping, coupe-like roof. It is 3,995 mm long, so it qualifies for the lower tax rate on sub-four-metre cars, and it has a 308-litre boot. Toyota sells the same car as the Urban Cruiser Taisor, with different styling details and trim names.

Two engines are offered. The 1.2 Dualjet makes about 90 PS and 113 Nm, with a five-speed manual or AMT, and a factory CNG version on Sigma and Delta. The 1.0 Boosterjet turbo with mild hybrid makes 100 PS and 147.6 Nm, with a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic. Prices run from ₹6.85 lakh to ₹11.84 lakh ex-showroom for single-tone paint.

All versions now have six airbags and ESC. The touchscreen arrives at Delta, LED lamps and alloys at Delta+, the 9-inch screen, rear camera and wireless charger at Zeta, and the head-up display and 360-degree camera at Alpha. Dual-tone paint is offered on the Alpha turbo for about ₹14,000 extra over single-tone paint.

1.2 or turbo?

If you drive a manual and mostly in town, the 1.2 Delta+ at ₹8.15 lakh is enough. If you want an automatic, or drive on highways often, the turbo is the better engine and its six-speed automatic is far smoother than the 1.2’s AMT. The turbo Delta+ manual is only about ₹77,000 more than the 1.2 Delta+.

Which variant should you buy?

Delta+ Turbo for manual buyers at ₹8.92 lakh. Zeta Turbo automatic at ₹10.99 lakh for two-pedal buyers. Alpha adds the head-up display, 360-degree camera and cruise for about ₹85,000, which is pleasant but not essential.

Petrol or CNG?

The CNG is offered on Sigma and Delta, costing ₹99,000-1.05 lakh more than the petrol. It claims 28.51 km/kg and suits heavy city use. It is manual only, has less power and loses boot space to the cylinder.

How does it compare with the Toyota Taisor?

The Taisor is the same car, built by Maruti and sold by Toyota with different styling details and trim names. Equipment and engines match closely. Compare on-road quotes, discounts and warranty terms, and pick the better deal.
