Our verdict on the Kwid

The Kwid is a lot of car for very little money. It looks like a small SUV, has 184 mm of ground clearance and a 279-litre boot, and even the base car gets an 8-inch touchscreen. But it is light and simple underneath, and the three-cylinder 1.0 is adequate rather than strong. The Climber is the only version we would buy, because it gets six airbags and a rear camera for about ₹62,000 over the Evolution. If you can stretch to ₹6 lakh or more, a Maruti Celerio or Tata Tiago gives you a more substantial car.

Good things

  • Among the cheapest cars in India, from ₹4.53 lakh
  • 184 mm ground clearance and an SUV-like stance
  • 279-litre boot, generous for its size
  • AMT available on both trims

Could be better

  • Base Evolution has only two airbags; six need the Climber
  • 68 PS three-cylinder feels stretched on highways and with a full load
  • CNG is a dealer-fitted kit, not a factory option
  • Feels lightly built next to slightly pricier rivals

Renault Kwid: the cheap car that looks like an SUV

The Kwid is Renault’s smallest car in India. The 2026 facelift brought a new Renault logo, new wheel covers and a simpler line-up of two trims, Evolution and Climber, both with a five-speed manual or AMT. Prices dropped slightly and now run from ₹4.53 lakh to ₹5.61 lakh ex-showroom. Renault also cut the price of every version at the update.

There is one engine, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol of about 68 PS and 91 Nm. Claimed economy is 21.46 km/l for the manual and 22.3 km/l for the AMT. Renault dealers can fit an approved CNG kit to manual cars for ₹70,449. The AMT uses a rotary gear selector on the dashboard, which frees up space between the front seats.

Ground clearance is 184 mm and the boot holds 279 litres. Every Kwid has an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, LED DRLs and keyless entry. The Climber adds six airbags, a rear camera, electric mirrors and dual-tone styling. The AMT versions also get hill start assist. The Kwid uses 14-inch steel wheels on every version.

Which variant should you buy?

Climber. The ₹62,000 premium over Evolution buys six airbags instead of two, a rear camera, electric mirrors and steering controls. We would not buy the Evolution unless the budget is completely fixed.

Manual or AMT?

The AMT costs ₹37,000 more on Evolution and ₹46,000 more on Climber. It makes city driving easier and claims slightly better economy. It is slow to shift, but at this price it is good value.

Should you fit the CNG kit?

Only if you drive a lot. The kit costs ₹70,449, is fitted by the dealer with Renault’s approval and is offered on manual cars. It cuts fuel cost but takes boot space and some power. For under 1,000 km a month, stay with petrol.

How does it compare with the Maruti Alto K10?

The Alto K10 is lighter, very frugal and backed by Maruti’s huge service network. The Kwid has more ground clearance, a bigger boot and a larger screen. Both are basic cars; choose on cabin space and the dealer near you.
