Our verdict on the S-Presso
The S-Presso is a budget car and does what a budget car should: it is cheap to buy, very economical, especially on CNG, and easy to drive and park. The tall body makes getting in and out easy, and the AMT is offered at a low price. Its limits are equally clear. Safety equipment stops at two airbags and ESP, the cabin is narrow for three in the back, and it feels light and unsettled at highway speeds. The Std (O) lacks AC and should be avoided. For similar money the Renault Kwid offers more equipment, and a little more buys a Maruti Celerio with a roomier cabin. Buy the S-Presso for city running on the tightest budget; if you can stretch, look one class up for better safety.
Good things
- Very low purchase price and running costs, with CNG at 32.73 km/kg
- AMT available from ₹4.77 lakh
- Tall, upright cabin that is easy to get into
- Maruti's wide service network
Could be better
- Only two airbags, and a weak Global NCAP record for the India-made car
- Std (O) has no AC or power steering
- Narrow cabin; three adults in the back is a squeeze
- Feels light and nervous at highway speeds

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso: the cheapest Maruti, for city use
The S-Presso is Maruti's entry-level hatchback, priced from ₹3,49,900 to ₹5,27,400 ex-showroom. It uses a 1.0-litre K10C petrol with 67 PS and 89 Nm, with a 5-speed manual or an AMT, and a factory-fitted CNG option. Claimed economy is up to 25.3 km/l on petrol and 32.73 km/kg on CNG. There are eight variants across four trims.
All current variants carry the (O) suffix, which means dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill hold and rear parking sensors as standard. Comfort features build up through the trims: AC and power steering at LXi, front power windows, central locking and Bluetooth audio at VXi, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay at VXi+.
The design is upright, with a high seating position a 27-litre fuel tank and a 240-litre boot, which is enough for a weekly shop. It makes a sensible city car for one or two people, or a small family making short trips. For regular highway travel or a growing family, we suggest stretching to a larger hatchback with more airbags.
Which variant should you buy?
Skip the Std (O): it has no AC or power steering. The LXi (O) is the minimum, but the VXi (O) adds power windows, central locking and Bluetooth audio for ₹50,000, and is the one we would take. Only pay for the VXi+ if you want the touchscreen with phone mirroring.
Petrol, AMT or CNG?
If you drive a lot in the city, the VXi (O) CNG at ₹5.14 lakh cuts fuel costs, at the cost of boot space. If traffic is your main problem, the VXi (O) AMT at ₹4.77 lakh is good value. Note that there is no CNG with the AMT.
How does it compare with the Renault Kwid?
The Kwid has a similar SUV-like look, often more equipment per rupee and higher ground clearance. The S-Presso's advantages are its CNG option, Maruti's service network and stronger resale. Compare the exact trims you can afford, as the price ranges overlap.
Is it safe enough?
It has the legal basics plus ESP, but only two airbags, and the India-made car scored poorly in Global NCAP tests. If safety is a priority, look at cars in the ₹6 lakh range that offer six airbags as standard.
