Our verdict on the Astor
The Astor’s strength has always been equipment for the money, and that is still true. A panoramic sunroof, connected features and, at the top, ADAS come at prices below the Creta and Seltos. The weakness is the engine. With the turbo gone, the only option is a 110 PS petrol with 144 Nm, which is adequate in town but feels stretched when the car is loaded or on a hilly highway, and claimed economy is lower than rivals’. The rear seat and ride are comfortable, and the CVT suits the engine’s nature. Buy it as a relaxed city SUV with plenty of features; if you want performance or efficiency, look at the Kushaq, Taigun or Creta.
Good things
- Panoramic sunroof available from ₹12.40 lakh
- Level 2 ADAS on the top trim at ₹15.30 lakh, below most rivals
- CVT automatic is smooth and suits city driving
- Comfortable cabin and ride
Could be better
- Only engine is a 110 PS petrol with 144 Nm; the turbo has been dropped
- Claimed economy of 14.82 to 15.43 km/l trails most rivals
- No diesel, hybrid or CNG option
- MG’s dealer network is thinner than Hyundai’s or Maruti’s

MG Astor: plenty of features, modest performance
The Astor is MG’s mid-size SUV, 4,323 mm long and 1,809 mm wide with a 2,585 mm wheelbase. It sits below the Hector in MG’s range and competes with the Creta, Seltos, Kushaq and Taigun, usually by offering more equipment for less money. It has a 48-litre fuel tank, seats five, and is now sold only as a petrol.
The range has been simplified. The 1.3 turbo petrol has gone, leaving a 1,498 cc petrol with 110 PS and 144 Nm, its torque arriving high at 4,400 rpm. It comes with a five-speed manual on all trims or an eight-step CVT on Select and above. Claimed economy is 15.43 km/l for the manual and 14.82 km/l for the CVT.
The trims are Sprint, Shine, Select, Sharp Pro and Savvy Pro. Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹9.79 lakh to ₹15.30 lakh. The panoramic sunroof arrives with the Select, ventilated seats with the Sharp Pro, and the Savvy Pro CVT is the only version with Level 2 ADAS. Automatics start at ₹13.56 lakh.
Which variant should you buy?
The Select CVT at ₹13.56 lakh. It has the panoramic sunroof, wireless phone mirroring and auto-hold, and the CVT makes the most of the engine. If you prefer a manual, the Select manual at ₹12.40 lakh gets the same main features for ₹1.16 lakh less.
Manual or CVT?
The CVT costs ₹1.16 lakh more at Select and ₹1.15 lakh more at Sharp Pro. It is smoother in traffic and keeps the engine in its useful range, but it is slightly less efficient. For mostly city use we would pay for the CVT.
Is the Savvy Pro worth it?
Only if you want ADAS. It costs ₹78,000 more than the Sharp Pro CVT and adds Level 2 ADAS and a Sangria Red interior. Otherwise the Sharp Pro has the comfort features that matter, including ventilated seats.
How does it compare with the Hyundai Creta?
The Creta offers a stronger turbo petrol, a diesel and a wider dealer network, and holds its value better. The Astor undercuts it at similar equipment levels and offers ADAS for less. If performance or resale matters, the Creta is the safer choice.
