Our verdict on the Hector

The Hector is still one of the roomiest, best-equipped SUVs for the money, and the facelift keeps that formula. The cabin is wide and airy, the rear seat is generous, and even the Select Pro feels well specified. The weaknesses are equally familiar. The 1.5 turbo petrol is adequate but works hard in a big, heavy body, and claimed economy of 12.40 to 13.94 km/l is low by current standards, so real-world running costs add up. There is no diesel until MG prices it. The Tata Harrier offers a strong diesel and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating at similar prices, and a Hyundai Creta diesel is far cheaper to run. Choose the Hector if space and features matter most and your yearly distance is low. If you drive a lot, wait for the diesel or look at a rival.

Good things

  • Wide, roomy cabin with a generous rear seat
  • Large 14-inch touchscreen and panoramic sunroof from the second trim
  • Six airbags and ESP standard
  • Long equipment list for the price

Could be better

  • Low claimed fuel economy of 12.40–13.94 km/l
  • No diesel on sale yet after the facelift
  • Petrol engine feels stretched in a heavy body
  • ADAS and ventilated seats only on the near-₹20 lakh Savvy Pro

MG Hector: space and screens, at a fuel cost

The Hector was facelifted in December 2025. For now it is sold only with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol making 143 PS and 250 Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT. The 2.0 diesel has been listed as upcoming but was not on sale when we checked. The five-seater runs from the Style to the Savvy Pro, with Blackstorm and Snowstorm special editions at the top.

Standard equipment includes six airbags, ESP and cruise control. The Select Pro is the trim that defines the Hector, adding the 14-inch portrait touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a rear camera and wireless charging. The Smart Pro adds keyless entry, leatherette and 18-inch wheels; the Sharp Pro adds Infinity audio and power seats; and the Savvy Pro adds Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera.

MG's ARAI figures are 13.94 km/l for the manual and 12.40 km/l for the CVT, which is low for the class. Prices on MG's site run from ₹12.14 lakh to ₹19.65 lakh for the regular trims, ex-showroom. Ask your dealer about the special editions and any diesel launch date before you finalise. The 60-litre tank helps range between fills.

Which variant should you buy?

The Select Pro manual. It has the big screen, panoramic sunroof, rear camera and wireless charging, which is what most buyers come for. If you need an automatic, the Smart Pro CVT is the entry point. Only go to the Savvy Pro if ADAS and ventilated seats matter to you.

Manual or CVT?

The CVT adds about ₹1.1 to ₹1.2 lakh and makes city driving much easier. It is also slightly less efficient on paper, at 12.40 km/l against 13.94 km/l. For mostly urban use, the CVT is worth it.

Should you wait for the diesel?

If you drive more than about 1,500 km a month, yes. The petrol's economy is modest and a diesel would cut fuel costs significantly. If your running is low, the petrol is fine and there is no reason to wait.

How does it compare with the Tata Harrier and Hyundai Creta?

The Harrier has a strong diesel and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating at overlapping prices. The Creta is smaller but offers diesel and turbo-petrol options with better economy. The Hector counters with more cabin space and screen per rupee. If running costs and safety ratings lead your list, the rivals are stronger.
