Maruti Suzuki Jimny

A small, genuine off-roader with a ladder frame, low-range four-wheel drive and short overhangs, sold as a five-door with four seats. It suits buyers who will actually use it on rough tracks or in the hills, or who want something different, not families looking for a practical everyday SUV.

  • Zeta₹12.54 lakh

The manual at ₹12.54 lakh. It has the same 4WD hardware, low range and six airbags as the Alpha, and steel wheels are arguably better off-road. The Alpha adds comfort, not capability.

  • Alpha₹13.46 lakh

The manual at ₹13.46 lakh if it will be a daily car. The larger screen, climate control, keyless start and auto headlamps make it easier to live with.

Our verdict on the Jimny

The Jimny is a car to buy with your heart and a clear idea of what you will use it for. Off the road it is excellent: the low-range gearbox, short overhangs, 210 mm of clearance and light weight let it go places far bigger SUVs cannot. On the road it asks more of you. The 1.5 petrol is fine around town but runs out of breath on the highway, the ride is firm, the rear seat is cramped, and the boot is small. If you need a family car that can handle the odd bad road, a Brezza or a Thar Roxx makes more sense. If you want a real off-roader that is easy to park and cheap to run, the Jimny is hard to beat at this price.

Good things

  • Proper low-range 4WD, ladder frame and short overhangs
  • Six airbags and hill descent control on every variant
  • Compact enough to fit tight trails and city parking
  • Maruti Suzuki service network and reliable 1.5 petrol

Could be better

  • Only four seats, with a cramped rear and a 208-litre boot
  • 104.8 PS feels short on the highway, especially overtaking
  • 4-speed automatic is dated and costs economy
  • Expensive for its size at ₹12.5 to ₹14.7 lakh

Maruti Suzuki Jimny: a real off-roader in a small package

The Jimny sold in India is the five-door version, made here and longer than the three-door sold abroad. It is still small at 3,985 mm long and 1,645 mm wide, and it keeps the ladder-frame chassis, rigid axles and part-time four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case that define it. Ground clearance is 210 mm, with a 36-degree approach angle and 46-degree departure angle.

Power comes from Maruti’s 1.5 petrol, making 104.8 PS and 134.2 Nm, with a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque-converter automatic. Claimed economy is 16.94 km/l for the manual and 16.39 km/l for the automatic, but expect less on the highway, where the boxy shape and short gearing work against it.

There are two trims, Zeta and Alpha, each with a manual or automatic. Indicative ex-showroom prices run from ₹12.54 lakh to ₹14.67 lakh for the dual-tone Alpha automatic. All versions have the same off-road hardware, six airbags, hill hold, hill descent control and a brake-based limited-slip function.

Which variant should you buy?

If the Jimny is mainly for off-road use, the Zeta manual at ₹12.54 lakh. It has all the 4WD hardware. If it will be your daily car, the Alpha adds a 9-inch screen, climate control, alloy wheels and keyless start for about ₹92,000, which makes it more pleasant to live with.

Manual or automatic?

The automatic costs about ₹1.06 lakh more and uses an older four-speed gearbox. It is easy in traffic and works well off-road at low speeds, but it is slower and less efficient on the highway. Enthusiasts and frequent highway users should choose the manual.

How does it compare with the Mahindra Thar?

The Thar offers diesel engines, more power and a bigger cabin, and the Thar Roxx adds a proper rear seat. The Jimny is lighter, narrower and easier to place on tight trails, and it costs less to run. Choose the Thar for power and space, the Jimny for agility and economy.

Can it work as a family car?

Only for a small family. It seats four, the rear is tight for adults on long trips, and the boot holds 208 litres with the rear seats up. Fold them and it becomes a useful two-seater with plenty of luggage room.
