Our verdict on the Thar

Buy it with your eyes open. The Thar is a want, not a need, and the three-door punishes anyone who pretends otherwise. The September 2026 update added a cheaper 1.5 diesel, rear-wheel-drive only, from ₹10.32 lakh, and kept the parts that matter: 330 Nm from the 2.2 diesel and 2.0 turbo petrol, and optional four-wheel drive with a proper low range and locking differential. It remains one of very few genuinely capable off-roaders sold at a normal price. It is also a two-door car with a rear seat that adults reach by folding a front seat forward, and six airbags come only on the ZXT. If you have children or carry passengers often, look at the five-door Thar Roxx instead.

Good things

  • 330 Nm from the 2.2 diesel and 2.0 petrol, with proper four-wheel drive, low range and a locking differential
  • Real off-road ability, not a styling package
  • New 1.5 diesel brings the entry price down to ₹10.32 lakh
  • Holds value unusually well for the segment

Could be better

  • Two doors: rear access means folding a front seat, every time
  • Six airbags, a rear camera and front sensors only on the top ZXT trim
  • Ride and handling are those of a rugged off-roader on broken city roads
  • The cheapest versions are RWD only, which removes the main reason to own a Thar

Mahindra Thar: a proper off-roader, with two doors to match

The Thar OG is Mahindra’s three-door off-roader, updated in September 2026 with deliveries from October. It comes in three trims, AXT, LXT and ZXT, with prices from ₹10.32 lakh to ₹18.99 lakh ex-showroom. Mahindra calls these introductory prices. Every version has a hard top, two doors and four seats, with a folding front seat for rear access.

There are three engines. A new 1.5 diesel (119 PS, 300 Nm) comes only with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive. The 2.2 diesel (152 PS, 330 Nm) and the 2.0 turbo petrol (162 PS, 330 Nm) are offered with manual or automatic gearboxes and with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The 4WD versions add low range, an electronic locking differential and terrain modes.

Equipment rises clearly by trim. AXT is basic, with dual airbags, ESP, hill descent control and rear sensors. LXT adds a 10.24-inch touchscreen, cruise control and 18-inch alloys. ZXT adds six airbags, a rear camera, front sensors, LED lighting, leatherette seats and a wireless charger. All eight colours are offered on every trim.

Which variant should you buy?

If you want a Thar for what it does best, the LXT 2.2 diesel 4WD: ₹16.43 lakh as a manual or ₹18.00 lakh as an automatic. It has the low-range 4WD and the touchscreen. The ZXT adds safety and lighting for about ₹1 lakh more, which is worth it if you will drive at night or carry passengers.

RWD or 4WD?

Four-wheel drive with low range is the whole point of a Thar. The RWD versions are cheaper and lighter, but they make the Thar a two-door lifestyle car with a firm ride, and other SUVs do that job with more space and comfort. Buy RWD only if you never leave tarmac and simply want the look.

Petrol or diesel?

The 2.2 diesel is the one for highway and trail use, with 330 Nm from 1,500 rpm. The 2.0 turbo petrol matches that torque, is cheaper and quieter, and suits lower mileage owners. The new 1.5 diesel is RWD and manual only, so it does not suit serious off-roading.

How does it compare with the Thar Roxx?

The Roxx has five doors, a usable rear seat and a bigger boot, and costs more. If you carry family or more than one passenger regularly, it is the better buy. The three-door Thar is shorter and easier to place on tight trails, and is the choice only for owners who mainly drive alone or as a couple.
