Our verdict on the Punch EV
The facelift fixed the Punch EV’s biggest weakness, its range. The 40 kWh version claims 468 km and gets a much stronger 129 PS motor, and it starts at ₹11.19 lakh. That Smart+ 40 is the one we would buy, adding cruise or a 360-degree camera only if you need them. The 30 kWh car is cheaper but slower and shorter-legged, so it suits only short city commutes. The cabin is compact, and the boot is modest for a family. If you mostly drive in town and can charge at home, the Punch EV is easy to recommend. If you regularly drive long distances, a bigger EV or a petrol car still makes more sense.
Good things
- 40 kWh pack claims 468 km and brings a 129 PS motor
- Six airbags, ESP and climate control on every variant
- Upright SUV shape, easy to get into and to park
- Lifetime battery warranty for first owners of the 40 kWh version
Could be better
- 30 kWh version has only 88 PS and noticeably less range
- Rear seat and boot are tight for a family of five
- Rear camera arrives only with the 40 kWh Smart+ or above
- Real-world range will be well below the MIDC claim

Tata Punch EV: bigger batteries for the small electric SUV
The Punch EV is the electric version of Tata’s smallest SUV, with its own styling and a front-mounted motor. The February 2026 facelift replaced the old 25 and 35 kWh packs with 30 and 40 kWh batteries. The 30 kWh car makes 88 PS and claims 365-375 km; the 40 kWh car makes 129 PS and claims 468 km. Both have 154 Nm.
Prices run from ₹9.79 lakh to ₹12.99 lakh ex-showroom across six versions: Smart 30, Smart+ 30, Smart+ 40, Adventure 40, Empowered 40 and Empowered+ S 40. Tata also offers a battery-rental plan that lowers the purchase price in exchange for a per-kilometre charge. Smart is offered only with the 30 kWh pack, while Adventure and above come only with 40 kWh.
Every version has six airbags, ESP, hill hold and automatic climate control. The touchscreen arrives at Smart+, the rear camera and parking brake with auto hold on Smart+ 40, the 360-degree camera on Empowered, and the sunroof and ventilated seats on Empowered+ S. DC fast charging at up to 65 kW takes the battery from 20 to 80 percent in about 26 minutes, Tata claims.
30 kWh or 40 kWh?
40 kWh. It costs ₹80,000 more at Smart+ but brings about 100 km more claimed range and 41 PS more power. Unless every trip is a short city run and you charge daily, the larger battery is worth it.
Which variant should you buy?
Smart+ 40 at ₹11.19 lakh for value. Adventure 40 adds cruise, keyless entry and push-button start for ₹75,000. Empowered 40 adds the 360-degree camera and bigger screens. Empowered+ S is only ₹30,000 more again for a sunroof and ventilated seats.
Should you take the battery-rental plan?
It lowers the purchase price to ₹6.49 lakh, but you then pay about ₹2.6 for every kilometre. For low annual mileage it can make sense. For heavy users, buying the battery outright usually works out cheaper. Do the sum for your own driving.
Punch EV or Punch petrol?
The EV costs more upfront but much less to run if you charge at home. It is also quicker and quieter. If you cannot charge at home or work, or drive long distances often, the petrol or CNG Punch is the simpler choice.
