Our verdict on the Safari
The Safari is a comfortable, well-equipped three-row SUV with a lot of road presence for the money. The new 1.5 turbo petrol has lowered the entry price, and both engines make 170 PS, though the diesel's extra torque suits a heavy seven-seater better. The range is overwhelming at 72 variants, so focus on what you need. Pure X already has the sunroof, 360-degree camera and big screen. Accomplished X adds ventilated seats and a powered tailgate. The 6S captain-chair versions make the second row feel premium. Like most SUVs of this type, the third row is best for children or short trips, and boot space with all seats up is small. The diesel automatic's claimed 14.7 km/l is modest. If you mostly carry five, the Harrier is cheaper and lighter.

Tata Safari: the three-row Harrier for big families
The Safari is 4,668 mm long, 1,922 mm wide and 1,795 mm tall on the same 2,741 mm wheelbase as the Harrier. It is offered with seven seats, or six on the 6S versions, which replace the middle bench with ventilated captain chairs. Prices run from ₹13.40 lakh to ₹26.91 lakh ex-showroom after a price rise in September 2026.
Two engines are offered. The 2.0 Kryotec diesel makes 170 PS and 350 Nm and claims 16.3 km/l with the manual and 14.7 km/l with the automatic. The 1.5 Hyperion turbo petrol also makes 170 PS, with 280 Nm, and brings the starting price down to ₹13.40 lakh. Tata has not published a petrol mileage claim. Both engines come with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.
Smart has six airbags, LED lights, automatic climate control and a digital driver display, but no touchscreen. Pure X adds the panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, 10.25-inch touchscreen and cruise control. Adventure X+ adds leatherette seats, a powered driver's seat and driver assists. Accomplished X adds ventilated seats, JBL audio and a powered tailgate, Accomplished X+ adds seven airbags and 19-inch wheels, and Accomplished Ultra adds a 14.5-inch screen and Dolby Atmos.
Which variant should you buy?
Pure X for value. It has the features that make the Safari feel premium, from ₹16.85 lakh for the petrol manual. If you want ventilated seats and a powered tailgate, Accomplished X is the next sensible step. Treat the Dark, Red Dark and Stealth editions as styling choices; they add around ₹25,000 to ₹65,000.
Petrol or diesel?
Diesel for most Safari buyers. It has 70 Nm more torque, which you notice with seven people and luggage, and it has a published mileage claim. It costs about ₹1–1.5 lakh more than the petrol at most trims. The petrol is quieter and cheaper to buy, and makes sense if you drive under about 12,000 km a year.
Six or seven seats?
The 6S layout costs only about ₹10,000 more and gives two ventilated captain chairs in the middle row, which are more comfortable on long trips and make it easier to reach the third row. Choose seven seats only if you regularly need to carry that many people. The 6S option starts at Accomplished X+.
Safari or Harrier?
The Safari costs about ₹40,000 to ₹85,000 more than the equivalent Harrier and adds a third row, a taller roof and the captain-chair option. The Harrier is cheaper and feels a little lighter to drive. If you carry more than five people even occasionally, the Safari is worth the extra.
