Our verdict on the Exter
The Exter makes most sense as a petrol manual in the middle of the range. HX4 at ₹7.28 lakh has what a family needs, and HX6 adds the comfort extras for about ₹71,000 more. The twin-cylinder CNG is cleverly packaged and cheap to run, but it still costs you roughly 166 litres of boot, so measure your luggage before choosing it. The 83 PS engine is adequate in town and feels stretched on the highway, especially as a CNG at 69 PS. The automatic is an AMT, which pauses on upshifts. If you want a proper automatic or more power at this money, look at the Punch or a well-specced hatchback instead.
Good things
- 391-litre boot on the petrol, generous for a 3,830 mm car
- Twin-cylinder CNG keeps about 225 litres of boot instead of filling it
- Six airbags, ESC and rear sensors from the ₹5.81 lakh base car
- Sunroof and dashcam available well under ₹9 lakh
Could be better
- 83 PS and 114 Nm are adequate, not quick, and the CNG drops to 69 PS
- The automatic is an AMT, with the pause at every upshift that implies
- Knight, dual-tone and matte versions add about ₹15,000 for paint and trim
- Base HX2 has no touchscreen and steel wheels without covers

Hyundai Exter: a small SUV that keeps its boot
The Exter sits below the Venue in Hyundai’s range. It is short at 3,830 mm but tall at 1,643 mm, which gives it an upright SUV stance, easy entry and 185 mm of ground clearance. The 2026 facelift brought new styling, renamed trims (HX2 to HX10) and more standard kit, but the same 1.2-litre petrol underneath.
That engine makes 83 PS and 114 Nm, with a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT. The CNG version uses two smaller cylinders under the boot floor, rated at 69 PS and a claimed 27.1 km/kg, and is manual only. Prices run from ₹5.81 lakh to ₹9.46 lakh ex-showroom before paint options. Knight, dual-tone and matte paint versions cost about ₹15,000 more.
Six airbags, stability control, hill assist and rear sensors are standard. The touchscreen arrives at HX3, rear AC vents at HX4, the sunroof at HX4+ (AMT) or HX6 (manual), and a factory dashcam at HX6. The HX8 adds alloy wheels, a wireless charger and auto headlamps, and the HX10 AMT tops the range with built-in navigation and connected features.
Which variant should you buy?
HX4 petrol manual at ₹7.28 lakh is the sensible one: touchscreen, wireless phone mirroring, rear camera, rear AC vents and TPMS. HX6 at ₹7.99 lakh adds the sunroof, climate control, cruise and a dashcam. HX8 adds alloys and a wireless charger. HX10 is AMT only and adds little beyond navigation and connected features.
Petrol or CNG?
The CNG costs about ₹1 lakh more at each trim and is claimed at 27.1 km/kg. If you drive over 1,000 km a month in town, it pays back. The catch is the boot: about 225 litres against 391, and power falls to 69 PS. For family trips with luggage, the petrol is the easier car to live with.
Manual or AMT?
The AMT costs ₹60,000-73,000 over the manual. It removes the clutch in traffic but pauses noticeably on upshifts. If you want a two-pedal car and can live with that, the HX6 AMT at ₹8.59 lakh is the most sensible AMT. There is no CNG automatic.
How does it compare with the Tata Punch?
The Punch is the obvious rival, with a five-star Global NCAP rating and its own twin-cylinder CNG. The Exter counters with six airbags as standard, a factory dashcam and a four-cylinder engine where the Punch uses a three-cylinder. Drive both; the choice often comes down to which cabin and dealer you prefer.
