Toyota Vellfire
Toyota's flagship MPV is a chauffeur car first: a five-metre van with two lounge-style rear seats, powered sliding doors and a quiet 2.5 strong hybrid. It suits owners who are driven rather than drive, and who want rear-seat comfort and Toyota reliability rather than a badge from a German luxury brand.

Our verdict on the Vellfire
The Vellfire is built around its second row, and that is where it makes sense. The rear seats recline with powered legrests, the cabin is quiet and the ride is soft. The 2.5 strong hybrid gives good economy for a vehicle this size. As a car to drive yourself it is ordinary, and the third row and boot are compromised by the size of the second-row seats. At ₹1.20–1.30 crore it is a very expensive Toyota. You are paying for the rear-seat experience, not for performance or brand prestige. If that is what you need, the Hi variant delivers most of it. If you mostly drive yourself or need seven usable seats, an Innova Hycross ZX(O) gives much of the practicality for a fraction of the price.
Good things
- Lounge-style second-row seats with powered legrests
- Quiet strong hybrid claiming 19.28 km/l
- Powered sliding doors, dual sunroofs and a long safety list
- Toyota reliability and service network
Could be better
- ₹1.20–1.30 crore is a lot for a Toyota
- Third row and boot are cramped compared with the body size
- Not engaging to drive; performance is adequate rather than strong
- Long waiting periods have been common

Toyota Vellfire: a lounge on wheels for the back seat
The Vellfire is a large luxury MPV, 5,005 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and 1,950 mm tall on a 3,000 mm wheelbase. It is imported and sold in two versions, Hi at ₹1,19,73,400 and VIP Executive Lounge at ₹1,29,72,000 ex-showroom. Its real rivals are chauffeur-driven luxury saloons rather than other MPVs, and it is bought mostly by people who sit in the back.
Power comes from a 2.5-litre petrol engine paired with electric motors in a strong-hybrid system, driving through an e-CVT. Combined output is about 193 PS and Toyota claims 19.28 km/l, which is good for a vehicle of this size and weight. The hybrid also lets it move silently at low speeds, which suits its role as a chauffeur car.
Both versions have powered second-row seats with ottoman legrests, dual sunroofs, powered sliding doors, six airbags and driver assists such as adaptive cruise control and lane trace assist. The Executive Lounge adds massage functions, detachable control panels for the rear seats and fold-out tables, with lighter interior colour options.
Which variant should you buy?
Hi, for most buyers. It already has the reclining lounge seats, sunroofs and sliding doors that define the car. The ₹10 lakh extra for the Executive Lounge buys massage seats, detachable controls and tables, which matter only if the rear passenger works or rests in the car for several hours a day.
Is it worth the price?
As a chauffeur car, it is cheaper than a long-wheelbase German luxury saloon and has more space and a better rear-seat recline. As a family MPV it is hard to justify, because the Innova Hycross offers seven seats, a hybrid and much of the comfort for a fraction of the price. Buy the Vellfire for the rear seat, not the badge.
How does it compare with the Kia Carnival?
The Carnival is also a large MPV with lounge-style middle-row seats and powered sliding doors, and it costs roughly half as much. It uses a diesel engine instead of a hybrid. The Vellfire has a more luxurious, quieter rear cabin and better claimed economy. If you want most of the experience for far less money, test the Carnival first. If the rear seat must be the best available, the Vellfire is the one.
