MG ZS EV

MG's original electric SUV for India, now positioned above the Windsor EV. It pairs a 50.3 kWh battery with a 176.75 PS motor, so it is quicker than most EVs at this price, and every version gets the same battery and range. It suits buyers who want a conventional, compact five-seat SUV shape rather than the Windsor's tall, lounge-style body.

Our verdict on the ZS EV

The ZS EV is a well-proven electric SUV with strong performance and a sensible battery size, but it is now an older design in a market that has moved on. At ₹18-21 lakh it faces the Tata Curvv EV, Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6 and MG's own Windsor EV, several of which offer bigger screens, more space or longer claimed range for similar money. Where the ZS still scores is in its punchy motor, compact footprint and a cabin that feels solid. The Excite Pro is the sweet spot; the Essence only makes sense if you specifically want ADAS. Before buying, compare it against the Windsor Pro, which has a larger battery and more rear space for less.

Good things

  • Strong 176.75 PS motor makes it one of the quicker EVs under ₹21 lakh
  • Same 50.3 kWh battery across the range, so no compromise on range in cheaper versions
  • Compact, easy-to-park SUV size with a solid-feeling cabin
  • MG's charging and service network is among the wider ones for EVs

Could be better

  • Older design; rivals now offer bigger screens and more features for the money
  • Rear seat is tighter than the cheaper Windsor EV's
  • The 10.1-inch touchscreen looks small next to rivals
  • MG's own Windsor Pro offers more range for less money

MG ZS EV: the quick, compact electric SUV

The ZS EV was one of the first long-range electric SUVs sold in India, and it is still MG's mid-range electric choice. It is a conventional five-seat SUV, 4,323 mm long, with a 2,585 mm wheelbase. In the MG line-up it sits above the Windsor EV on price but below the larger, seven-seat Hector Tomahawk EV.

Every version uses the same front motor making 176.75 PS and 280 Nm, and the same 50.3 kWh battery with a claimed 461 km of range. MG quotes a 50 kW DC fast-charge time of about an hour from low to 80 per cent, and 8.5-9 hours on a 7.4 kW home charger. The two top versions come with that 7.4 kW AC charger and installation included in the price.

Standard safety equipment covers 6 airbags, electronic stability control, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring and disc brakes all round. MG also offers the ZS EV under its battery-as-a-service plan, which lowers the purchase price in exchange for a per-kilometre battery rental; it suits low-mileage owners best.

ZS EV or Windsor EV: which MG should I buy?

The Windsor Pro has a bigger 52.9 kWh battery, a longer claimed range and far more rear-seat space, and it costs less than most ZS EV versions. The ZS is quicker and feels more like a traditional SUV. For families, we would pick the Windsor; for keen drivers who want a compact car, the ZS.

Which version should I buy?

The Excite Pro. It adds the panoramic sunroof and wireless phone mirroring to the base car and keeps the same battery and safety kit. The Exclusive Plus is worth it if you want the 360-degree camera and blind-spot alerts. Only pay for the Essence if you want Level 2 ADAS.

How far will it really go on a charge?

MG claims 461 km. In mixed real-world driving, testers have recorded around 340-350 km, and highway range at higher speeds will be lower. That is still enough for most daily use and for intercity trips with one fast-charging stop.
