Our verdict on the Hector Tomahawk EV

The Hector Tomahawk EV gives you a lot of electric SUV for the money: a big battery, a long claimed range, quick DC charging and a large cabin, from under ₹20 lakh. MG has been sensible with standard safety too, with 6 airbags and ESC on every version. The caveats are that it is a new model with no long-term track record yet, the 7-seater's boot is tiny with every seat up, and ADAS is limited to the most expensive versions. Five-seat buyers should also compare it with the Mahindra XEV 9e and Tata Harrier EV, which offer stronger brand presence and more power. For a family that wants space and range without paying ₹25 lakh or more, it is worth a close look.

Good things

  • Large 69.2 kWh battery and 517 km claimed range at under ₹24 lakh
  • Long 2,810 mm wheelbase makes all rows roomy
  • Fast 90 kW DC charging
  • Choice of five or seven seats, with a big boot on the five-seater

Could be better

  • Only 192 litres of boot with all seven seats in use
  • Level 2 ADAS only on the top Essence
  • New model, so there is no long-term reliability record yet
  • MG publishes ground clearance only at the battery pack, not for the whole body

MG Hector Tomahawk EV: a big electric family SUV from under ₹20 lakh

The Hector Tomahawk EV is a separate model from the petrol Hector, with its own body, platform and price list. It is 4,745 mm long with a 2,810 mm wheelbase, and MG sells it with seven seats in every version, or five seats on the top Essence. A plug-in hybrid version is also sold under the Hector Tomahawk name with its own prices.

Every version uses the same front motor rated at 150 kW and 310 Nm, and the same 69.2 kWh battery with a claimed 517 km on the MIDC cycle. DC charging runs at up to 90 kW, which MG says takes the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in about 35 minutes. A 7.4 kW home charger needs about 12.5 hours for 10-100 per cent.

The top Essence adds vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home functions, so the battery can run appliances or back up your house during a power cut. MG also offers the car on battery rental, which cuts the upfront price but adds a per-kilometre charge; work out the total over your expected years of ownership before choosing it.

Five seats or seven?

Choose seven only if you will use the third row often. With all seats up, the boot is just 192 litres, enough for a few soft bags. Fold the third row and it grows to 528 litres. The five-seater, only sold as the Essence, has 610 litres.

Is the Tomahawk EV safe?

Every version has 6 airbags, electronic stability control and traction control. The Exclusive adds a 360-degree camera. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and automatic emergency braking are only on the Essence.

How does it compare with the Tata Harrier EV and Mahindra XEV 9e?

The Tomahawk is cheaper to start and offers seven seats, which neither rival does. The Tata and Mahindra have more power, and the Harrier EV offers all-wheel drive. If you need seven seats, the MG is the stronger case; for a five-seater, drive all three.
